Excerps taken from K.C Joyners' article "TE Learning New Tricks" on ESPN Insider.

Before you read this know that KC is a closet Dolphins fan; this article was written without a negative bias...

"Prior to this season, Randy McMichael indicated he wanted to be used more as a wide receiver, as he considered himself the equal of Gates and Gonzalez. The metrics certainly don't bear that out."

"These are simply pathetic numbers. The numbers were even worse when McMichael was flexed out. He had 20 passes thrown to him when he lined up outside and caught only 11 for 116 yards, which equates to an average of 5.8 yards per attempt."

"McMichael had five medium or deep passes thrown to him as a wide receiver, and he caught only one for an 18-yard TD, which equates to an average of 3.6 yards per vertical attempt. The Dolphins' quarterbacks had some problems last year, but they weren't bad enough to justify McMichael's numbers."

McMichael is best when used as a short yardage tight-end. That's where his numbers are, not in a deep vertical passing game.

now here's where everyone here slams Joyner.

no matter how fact based you research is......if you say something bad about a Dolphin, work for ESPN....or worst of all, BOTH.....you're dead meat around here.

Funny was how he said that Putzier set a record for number of times appearing on "Jacked Up". Wasn't that the truth.

No he's not. That's what he was used for this season, and that's what he was used for late last season, and his production has dropped because of it.

McMichael needs to run real routes to get open. He's not the kind of player who is going to suceed on releases and safety valve passes. It might be in the best interest of the team to use him like that at times, though.

Uhhhh.. no..

Joyner is 100% correct.

I would be interested to see how he was covered on those deep passes. If he had a linebacker and a safety on him, essentially double teamed, and Gus/Sage still threw at him.

Plus, I wonder how many times he was open and the QB threw it elsewhere. The funny thing about stats is that they only give you part of the story. You can tweak them and add enough qualifiers and conditions to suit your needs.

McMichael is a top 10 tight end in this league. If Daunte is healthy, I think he can be a top five.

He was used more as a tight end in his rookie and second years and that's where his numbers were at. I can remember only a few times when he caught some fairly deep bombs.

Sorry to say this, but I agree with Joyner and his research is rather accurate.

McMichael dropped A LOT of balls last year. A LOT.

I thought it was clear that Randy just was not used properly last year. He has serious lapses in concentration...but he's still highly athletic and very talented.

I wonder if he's in the same shape he was as a rookie...when he flew like superman over those two New Orleans defenders.
