Watching the 1st preseason game (for the 4th time) I can't help but notice how active Warmsley is. Great penetration and excellent pursuit, looked at his combine numbers and they were excellent. Anybody know why this guy didn't get drafted back in 2014?

He played Defensive End in college and they werent sure if he could bulk up with his frame for Defensive Tackle or would be too slow to transition to linebacker.

He impressed me too. High motor and really excellent hand use and leverage. I thought his hands were top notch.

He's a small school kid. Udfa in 2014 who bounced around a few rosters before landing with us. He was a DE in college but has bulked up to play DT. I suspect he just wasn't explosive enough as a DE and the move has just played into his strengths. He was a TFL monster in college but not that explosive a sack guy.

We're probably seeing the benefits of his work now. If he's still eligible, he's going to the PS again. He's not going to be our fourth DT, I doubt. One of the Jones' will prob fill that. Chris is my guess.

prob wont play tonight with the concussion. real shame, could cost him

As described by RobertHorry, coming out of college he was stuck in kind of the no-man's land of being a poor man's Aaron Donald. Scouts and talent evaluators weren't even sure they liked Aaron Donald until he kept slapping them across the face with absolutely dominant play to the point that they finally conceded. They weren't gonna do the same for a Julius Warmsley from Tulane despite his 18.0 TFLs and 6.0 Sacks. He was a guy that played at about 265 to 275 lbs and was known to be athletic (4.80 by reputation). He showed up at the pro day bulked up to 297 lbs but it was a drag on his speed, ran a 4.97 forty (still very good). His explosiveness and agility measures were really compelling though and if you put it all together he might have been the second most physically compelling DT behind Aaron Donald.

He's got a chance. But he's competing against Chris Jones who has more skins on the wall. I do wonder if we can get away with stashing him on the practice squad. If he dominates more preseason games like he did last week, I'd say probably not.
