The last time any team drafted a QB two years in a row this high was 1983 when Buffalo drafted Jim Kelly in the first round after drafting matt Kofler from SD ST at the 48th pick the prior year.

Actually the same year Indy did the same thing drafting John Elway at number one after taking Art Schlicter at number 4 overall but since they traded Elway I offically go with Buffalo.

Very similar situation drafting a player from a major program a year after taking a mountainwest player(was wac back then). This is a very rare occurance and has happened very few times in the history of the NFL so for people to act like its a depth move makes little sense.

Just thought some might be curious the last time it happened and how often it happned.

Good find. And excellent research as usual from you DLockz. I think this speaks volumes. The last time a QB who was drafted as high as Beck was SO HORRIBLE that his team took another QB in the 2nd round or sooner the following year was in the early 80's. Wow thats bad. I thought I was exaggerating a bit for humor effect when I would say Beck is the worst, but it looks like I wasnt exaggerating at all with this find.

As for the highlighted part in your quote..........Whats funny is the Mountain West Conference is still WHACK despite changing its name.

Well I think the Wac is improving as is the MWC but they both have a ways to go. Funny thing is three teams in the Wac might have been better than any team in the MWC the pst three years. I think Beck's age has alot to do with us drafting another Qb, I still see potential in Beck but I have always stated i thought he was an NFL backup.

Good research, dlockz.

A point I'd make is that we did have a depth problem at QB. We've thrown countless draft picks at the position in trade (almost all of which have blown up in our face), but from 1984 to the present, most of us would admit that one of the two most important positions on the field has been seriously neglected.

Which brings us to a weak class of QBs in 2008 when we need to add depth. IMO, Henne has an almost equal chance to Beck & McCown of starting this year. Had we waited even 5 or 10 picks longer to address the position, we could not have had good confidence that our selection could play this year if we needed him to.

So you make good points, but I feel that we screwed ourselves into the position we were in, along with the bad luck of there not being better QB prospects out this year so we didn't have to take one as high.

Agree we needed more depth but that could have been solved later or thru free agency. As you can see not many NFL teams have used this strategy and the only other team that did it was because they saw a better prospect.

I'm just curious. Why do you guys have the Atlanta Falcons QB in your sigs? Am I on the wrong site? Isn't this site for Dolphans? Don't worry, you guys can still pick Matt Ryan for your fantasy squads, dare is say #1 overall, and stare at his picture all day.

I say lets support the players we have. I like McCown, Beck, and Henne and want all of them to do well. Thats what I would think any reasonable fan would want for the players on his favorite team. Key word....."reasonable".

Desperation brought on by chronic ineptitude, I would say. We had no choice.

If one suggests taking a QB every year or two whether we need one or not, some folks lose their minds. But the smart teams do it, and always seem to have a good, young prospect waiting in the wings should trouble at the position arise.

I agree with taking a qb every year almost but nobody very often does it this high. If we waited until 4th or 5th I would agree it was a depth move.

I am a Ryan fan but as soon as I can get a Henne sig I will. Still think Ryan is head and shoulders above any Qb in the draft but Henne looks like a great prospect that should be our qb for years. Does anyone realize how hard it is to be the Michigan qb as a freshman.

I agree. I think Henne has just as good of a chance of starting as either Beck or.... McCown. When Coach Sparano was speaking at the Owners Meetings, he kept saying that "we have to slow down the game for Beck." Well, the best way to do it is to have a strong power running game. What he said for Beck, can be said for Henne. Having a power running game can ease the learning curve for a rookie. If Henne can show he can manage the game better than Beck or McCown, there is no reason that he shouldn't start. Henne is definately in this race for the starting job.

True what people forget is that that no Qb has the advantage because this is a new offense so basically all qb's are fairly equal right now with a slight edge to mccown based on his starting experience.

That's the catch right there. Miami's not looking for depth at QB. They are looking for a starter. There was a bumper crop of QBs taken back in 1983. 6 in the first round alone. They all thought they had a franchise QB. A good GM will take a QB every year until he has one. It doesn't matter where you take him b/c until you really have a good QB your team isn't gong anywhere. Yes one or two teams made to the Superbowl with garbage QBs, but they didn't return or last. The QB position is the single most important player on the field. A team leader. Ireland did the right thing taking Henne. It's true we have many holes to fill and the problems will not be solved in one draft. Until we get a quality QB, that position is a priority. It won't be fixed by taking QBs in the 6th or 7th round.

Was the Oilers or Bungals that took QB's on consecutive years Dave Klinger, Andre Ware? Top 5 overall?
