and figured I'd give some thoughts.
1. Let me just start by saying that this offense needs to realize that the game starts in the 1st quarter, not the 4th. This like the 4th time this season this team just simply ran out of time. Enough is enough with this offense, they need to get their crap together!
2. Joey Harrington may be an upgrade over Daunte but he's getting a huge pass. He threw behind receivers today and missed a couple of wide open receivers with bad throws. Aside from the the 2 TD drives at the end of the game, he was bad (Ronnie carried the team to the field goal). The sad thing about him being bad was that the O-Line protected him well on passing plays. He just couldn't get the job done until it was to late. I will give him some benefit of the doubt that his receivers dropped a couple of passes for him today and the first INT wasn't his fault but still, he didn't start to play well until there was 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter down 20-3. He basically did the same thing Daunte did, minus the sacks. This game by Harrington reminded me of Daunte's game against the Texans where you look at his stats at the end of the game and say to yourself, "he played crappier then that." Will somebody please get the damn ball to Chambers BEFORE THE 4TH QUARTER!
3. Ronnie Brown is going to be great in this league, not good. His running style reminds me of Clinton Portis because his feet never stop moving and today he was turning runs that should have went for losses into 3 yard gains. Our O-Line was good today during passing plays but the same can't be said about running plays. Ronnie really made his own day today with little help from the O-Line. Again they played better then in past weeks but left Ronnie out to dry on a lot of runs.
4. Derek Hagan has a great shot of turning out to be a steal. I like what I saw out of him today I wouldn't be shocked if he's the teams # 2 WR by the end of the year!
5. Our secondary is our handi-cap on defense. Watching Coles steal that ball in the end zone that should have been picked or at the very least knocked down and then fake Eddie Jackson out of his boots and make him trip over his own feet, it made me realize how much we miss Sam Madison. Madison lost a few steps no doubt about it but he's a smart player. Business and business and I'm not mad we lost Madison but I definitely think out secondary issues need to be fixed. This defense played to good to let 2 bonehead plays cost us the game. And that's exactly what those plays did!
6. You guys are right about Murlarky. Some plays he called today just left me scratching my head and actually had Jets fans laughing at us. PATHETIC!
7. Nick Saban punked out not going for the TD on that 4th and inches when he elected to take the short Field Goal. I understand if it's 4th and inches at your opponents 20 but inside the 5 you've got to have faith that your running back can get you a foot and a half. The Jets had just scored a TD and had all the momentum in the world and instead of going for the jugular Saban played it safe. He should have went for it there because with the way our offense was playing up until that point, it seemed we wouldn't have many chances like that. That call pissed me off and showed a lack of guts IMO. On the road in a tough environment you go for the TD and try to take the air out of the building. Jets fans cheered when we went for the Field Goal.
8. Trying a 50 yard Field Goal was just plain dumb. It was cold, the field looked like crap, and Saban rushed the kick big time. He had a timeout to spare in that situation and he probably should have taken it and allowed Mare to figure out how the Field Goal would look and how much he would have to get on it to make it. Instead it was like Mare rushed out on the field to miss the Field Goal and did. I thought there could have been an interference call on that 3rd down before the Field Goal but there was a no call. Either way I think we should have gone for the first down there to try to get in better position or at least have used our TO to give Mare an idea of what it was going to take to make the kick in those cold conditions.
9. Channing Crowder is going to be a player in this league!
There's a million things I'm probably leaving out in this post. One positive thing I want to say is that Jason Taylor is a beast. He was bringing it to the Jets and their fans in a major way. If I was to pick the best player on the field today on either side of the ball, I would go with him. He gave it to the Jets fans and I loved every second of it. He's the man, plain and simple and I hope we can turn it around and get this guy to a Super Bowl because he's still in his prime and needs to get the chance to go out a winner before it's to late!
