Is he the bigtime LT we wanted? Or is he just filling a hole...

Well consider how Damion McIntosh became a decent LT under Houck, Shelton can become much better than McIntosh.

I would not call him Great but i would say he is solid.

he is solid and didnt quite play up to standard in Arizona but he is a Big guy and he is pretty good at his position. and with Mr. Houck he will be a alot better

Shelton is a veteran who somewhat resurrected his career with the Browns last season. He played very well early in the season before struggling some late in the year. He is a player the Browns would like to re-sign, because his departure would create a huge void on the left side of their line. Shelton is a solid overall athlete for the position and can handle speed rushers in pass protection. His biggest weakness is that he is not very tough and does not show consistent pop in the run game. In this league, quality left tackles are hard to come by, so expect Shelton to have a solid market once free agency opens.
-espn insider

espn also has Stockar McDougle rated higher.

So i'm not sure. I've heard "hes a free agent sleeper" and i've heard "hes not very good" we will just have to see.

i've also heard the oppisate of the espn insider thing saying he cant handle speed rushers.

Stockar is a bust !! How do the JAgs Sign him I do not know?

LJ is a gap filler. I think Miami and Hudson have high hopes for Anthony Alabi over the next few years. LJ bridges that gap to him.

From the games I seen him in he's just a step up from McIntosh. He looks alot like McIntosh in pass blocking. And he has slow feet. Not very athletic. He does play more powerful than McIntosh in the running game. And he is decent when he locks on.

Here is a peice from NFL insider. It seems pretty accurate:

Shelton is a massive, wide body hog type OL and he never fit as an OT because of lack of quickness on the perimeter, and for some strange reason he did not flourish inside, where his skills would seem to be more suited. He does have excellent overall strength and when he can engulf defenders he can be very effective. He has an excellent initial punch and he uses his long arms and hands well. He can certainly handle the bull rush and he is at his best in a short area power game. He lacks speed and range and he is vulnerable if you put him on an island. Not only does he struggle with quickness off the edge, but he's at his worst vs. double moves and because he lacks balance, he tends to overextend and he cannot redirect or recover

He's a good veteran and it was a great pickup by Saban. Houck will make him even better and adding him to the line automatically improves it.

everything I've read says he is a step up from McIntosh anyway you look at it...so it was a good move to get him for basically the same amount of $. For any concerns about his 'balance" etc. Houck breaks down tape so well and instructs positioning that I expect his abilities to improve even more so when he's properly taught the million and one fundamentals which I'm sure wasn't broken down to him before the way Houck will do so. I'm happy with the pickup. As long as it's an upgrade over current status-quo...and not spending a ton of more $ Saban's doing a good job.

That is one of the worst reviews I've ever seen. He got better later in the year, his weakness comes from speed rushers, and has plenty of pop in the running game:shakeno:

That's why he should re-try RT.

The problem is those ESPN insider ratings are at least 2 years old. Stockar is terrible. Zach Thomas is only rated 78. Taht makes him the 15th ranked linebacker in the league.

He's certainly an upgrade from Big Mac, any way you look at it...He is a former 1st rounder who hasn't lived up to his billing. He's also had several different OL coaches. Perhaps HH can work his magic and get the best out of him. He did seemingly ressurect his career last year at Cleveland. He came out of Eastern Mich in '99 so Saban may have had some contact with him as well....
