I know in the heat of a bad loss (and this certainly qualified as BAD) people need to vent and to point out the mistakes, and those that made them, that caused the poor showing. But truth is - every team and every player has days like this. The great QBs have all had days like Henne had today and even most super bowl winning teams have a loss like this somewhere during the season. So let me sum up my feelings in a few notes:
#1 - The Fins do not have the personnel in place to be a serious playoff contender. I started a thread last week titled "Before we get too excited" where I listed statistics that showed how average we are. We normally play above our talent level and often win against teams with superior talent. If we do not play extremely well, losses like today result. But I feel we are getting better personnelwise. A team is not built in 1 or 2 years.
#2 - As my avitar shows I'm a big fan of Chad Pennington. But that doesn't mean I feel the need to rip Chad Henne apart to somehow make Penny look better. Henne had a very poor game. But he is still learning and has the tools to be a very good NFL QB. He was spectacular in the first Jets game and has been solid in every other game until the 4th quarter today. I feel confident that he is going to be good for us for years to come.
#3 - This is the same coaching staff that turned a 1-15 season around to a 11-5 one. They have a total of 16 wins and 12 losses with a team that was the league's worse when they arrived. If I feel Henne is being limited by the lack of play makers around him (and I do), then I must feel our coaching staff is also limited in what it can do both offensively and defensively. We've had a chance to win every regular season game since this staff has been here. Have they always made good decisions? No - But the team is disciplined (not an easy task), hard working, and prepared each week. They have used some innovative ideas to cover some of our deficiencies offensively. I think they do a fine job.
Those are my thoughts. While I'm deeply disappointed in the loss and probable playoff elimination; I'm still proud of what this team has done over the last year and a half.
