Keep in mind the overtone, the overarching concept here is: We are Rebuilding.
Now, we NEED to secure perhaps the most crucial, and God knows the hardest position to solidify, Quaterback.
If you're rebuilding, towards your first year, YOU NEED to have a developing QB - either a sure-fire hit (i.e. Carson Palmer), OR a mix of picks that although less secure, at least have a lot of upside and can turn into a starter.
QBs at least take 2-3 years to develop in this league.
Now my first reaction when they selected Henne was "ouch, I feel bad for Beck." Listen, I like John Beck, despite of his horrendous showing last season (not all his fault of course). But if you're taking the perspective of whats best for the team, you need to make sure QB is at least solidified in 2 years, when we'll be contending... so here comes Henne.
Henne is a big, strong armed QB thats tough. Has many flaws that need to be hammered out, but luckily we have a good QB coach.
We produced a solid line, and hopefully we'll get that LG for our young QBs.
In worst case scenario, we have a mediocre veteran QB in McCown... but look guys, we need our qb of the future, and i like our chances with Henne AND Beck - two qbs that will get a fair chances this season. i feel bad for Beck - but competition will produce a decent starter this season.
So far, the draft is going pretty solid, not a "sexy, high profile" draft, but very productive.
And for those that wanted a CB, that can be plugged in when we're a little closer to contending (i.e. Aaron Ross for the Giants), we needed to secure this position first.
