"I don't waver at all in saying this, 'I feel like I'm a better player today than I was at any point last year," Smiley said. "I benefited from this offseason program this year. Last year, maybe I was trying to take it a easy on my shoulder. I made 100 percent of my workouts this year. When we broke for six weeks, I was here, and we were working out three or four days a week. You know, Long and Grove and Vernon Carey, we were all doing our own thing. So I feel amazing, I really do."

What kind of line can this be?

"I don't want to make any predictions, because sometimes players make predictions and they backfire," Smiley said. "But knowing myself and knowing my offensive linemates, we can be as good as we want to be. I mean, look at it. I played on an offensive line (in San Francisco) that was shuffled around, and we never really built any continuity. And Grove was on an offensive line in Oakland, where everybody knows the issue there, the same deal. If we can pick up a good player here, a good player there, and we've got Jake Long who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, who is unbelievable, and we've got Vernon Carey who is one of the best right tackles in the league. If Donald (Thomas) can come back healthy and do his thing... you know, why can't we be the best offensive line in the league? That's our goal.

If our O-Line stays healthy, we'll be tough to stop. I don't know about "Best in the league" but, stranger things have happened. I think we'll have the best line in the AFC East though.

smiley's a good interview... i like the guy a lot... and am equally as excited about our offensive line

Best news so far is that Shawn Murphy looks good, great insurance policy or more.

I hope he's right. Games are won at the lines.

Whats he mean 'if we pick up a good player here and a good player there'? He praises all the starters so that must mean he thinks the backups suck.

He praises all of the starters except RG- maybe it's a clue that we're looking to get Brian Waters or that other veteran G that's available, I can't think of his name. Or maybe he means Murphy or Thomas stepping it up, but it's curious that he didn't phrase it that way.

There aren't any veteran guards out there (short of a trade) who would provide an upgrade over what we have. Guys like Kendall are aging and not as good as what they once were.
Thomas was injured in the opening game, but from what I've read he was very impressive in TC and was playing well against the Jets as well.
The guy stood out from day 1.
Give the young guys a chance.

i don't think the players know what the FO is planning. so i guess Smiley doesn't know anything regarding Kendall or Waters.

I can assure you that our players know nothing about what players we may or may not be looking at.

Thomas is injured and unproven, Murphy is raw. I would take Kendall or Waters over Ndukwe or Alleman in a heartbeat, and let them compete for a starting position. If Thomas or Murphy are healthy and ready to start, great. But I don't want to go risk going through another season with a weak link at RG, especially if it's easily avoidable.

The point is that Smiley seemed to indicate that we need something more at RG, the only position on the line that he didn't praise. That's interesting to me, an opinion froma guy starting on the line. It doesn't mean that he's in conferences with Ireland about it or that anything is in the works. It was just an interesting comment imo.

Either his comments were contradictory or he hasn't faith Thomas will return healthy and hates the backups.
