he's a very fast runner
No, don't say that please (affectionaltely speaking-and board members, don't get perverted with that).
If the guy has power let that be a bonus, but let's find the guy who can avoid collisions all together and not the guy who wins them. Those guys fumble too much (which Alstott does), get hurt too often (which Alstott does), won't flip the field on somebody (Altsott isn't known for long runs and rightfully so) and have shorter careers (he hasn't made an impact in a while because of injuries).
I'm not trying to attack you. I know it might seem like it. Seeing a guy who can stomple a defender sure looks impressive as can be, but Barry Sanders is largely considered the best ever. I know there's no one with Barry's C.O.D. ability and inventive nature, but there's a handful of guys who are close. Barry was made by being able to elude and turn any play into a footrace. That's the kind of back I want.
Quick lesson; if a guy's a better athlete than you, you'll sink his hips and play defensive. That's to mean the defender will let the ball carrier get to you. If you got reckless and miss the ball carrier turns it into a footrace. Caught or not, he's already made a big play. That's why you take the best position and make sure you get a shot on him, but he gets ground for it. Those are hidden yards nobody talks about. That's FREE YARDS just for being a better athlete. If a guy's willing to measure up a defender you'll get reckless and try to knock the snot out of him. Even if he wins, he'll have to regather and restart. It's just a series of collisions until he's tackled. That leads to all the bad stuff.
Quick little test, check the number of fumbles for the little elusive guys, like Warrick Dunn. See how often he fumbles as opposed to TJ Duckett. Contact sport or not, football's still won with athleticism. Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Deion Sanders, Barry Sander etc. etc. Get the best athlete you can.
