Last year on a vikings defense that got better as the year went along our free agent acquistion Keith Newman was the best LB on the team and many viking fans will even tell you that he probably was their best overall defender. I think his acquisition flew under the radar a bit but he will be a key part of our defense this year and maybe for a few more years. So in reality instead of wasting draft picks in the supplementral draft on a kid like Ahmad Brooks lets roll with all the potential we have on the roster. I have a gut feeling that around week 6 or 7 this miami defense will be pretty scarey to play against!!!!!!!! Especially if we pick up Big Daddy to clog up the middle and free up space for all of our LB's to roam and make plays.

Say what you must. But I dont think drafting Brooks would be a waste. He can play all linebacker positions and would add young depth. I think Newman's 29 or 30.

It appears that Nick Saban likes this guy because he didn't get any other FA LB's and he didn't draft any LB's either.

If the Dolphins can get this guy to reach his full potential than Miami should have an extremely good Linebacking core this year.

no ,,, we should go for brooks cuz he will be a star on the league , have you seen him play ??no way we should miss on a player like this

The supplemental draft is a risk in itself, alot of you guys are huge on taking risk that could affect the future of this team but i know Saban will make the best decision possible when it comes on us taking a chance on Brooks or going with Newman.

Why is everyone so high on Brooks?? He's got injury problems, off field issues, and there's no telling how high a pick it will take to get him.

I'm just wondering if Keith Newman was so good why did the Vikes not try and sign him back and then why did virtually every team in the league ignore him in free agency?

Here's a story on Keith Newman...by Tim Yotter of Vikings Update.

Linebacker Weighs In

Keith Newman By Tim Yotter

Date: Mar 1, 2006

The Vikings’ linebacker situation is all up in the air, with three players who each started at least six games all scheduled for free agency on March 3. Keith Newman lets us know what his status is.

All linebacker Keith Newman did was keep proving himself to the Vikings the last two years, but the free-agent-to-be expects that he’ll be doing that with another team next year.

Newman told Viking Update Wednesday afternoon that he was informed the Vikings don’t intend to bring him back.

“I really don’t think they’re going to bring me back,” Newman said. “That’s the indication they gave my agent, and if that’s the case then I’ll just look to move on.”

Newman said one of his agents, Jim Steiner of SFX, talked with Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski about a week ago, and Steiner told Newman they don’t intend to re-sign him.

“I guess they just said they were going in another direction, and I guess I’m not involved in that direction. With 10 coaching changes in the NFL this year, you’ve got 10 different guys that are going to do things 10 different ways. Some players may be included in the way the franchises are going in their football business and some not. You just have to be prepared to move on if that’s the case,” Newman said.

Newman said he talked with defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin and linebackers coach Fred Pagac after they joined the Vikings coaching staff, but those discussions were more on the lines of introducing themselves to him rather than in-depth conversations.

Tomlin is preparing to implement the “Tampa-2” defense with the Vikings this season, a change in philosophy that is generally thought to require speedy linebackers who are adept at coverage. Newman, however, thinks he could fit that Tampa-2 mold.

“I think I could fit. I don’t think it would really change the linebackers. The Tampa Cover 2 is just a different style of defense based on a coverage,” Newman said. “The linebackers … react to things, break on the ball when it’s thrown short. I think I’d fit in quite nicely. I played some off the ball last year and we played some Cover 2 at times. I just think sometimes when teams have an idea of what type of linebacker you might be and what type of player you might be if the scheme changes, then you might not fit in.”

After starting only one of the first four games at strongside linebacker in 2005, Newman broke into the starting lineup again in the fifth game of the season and started the next nine games before a knee injury kept him out of action for the final three games of 2005.

In 2004, he started 14 of the 15 games he played and both playoff contests. He has started 10 games or more each of the last five seasons in Minnesota and Buffalo, and 74 of his 90 games in the NFL. He finished ninth on the team in tackles in 2004 and 10th in 2005.

“It’s just been two great years in Minnesota. The first year I was supposedly going to be a backup and I ended up playing the most snaps out of all the linebackers. Then they tried to replace me and I still ended up being an impact player at the end of the day.”

I'm sorry, but we are weakest at the LB position IMO. Ouside of Zach we really don't have a great LB core. I know Channig had a solid season for a rookie, but he will have to prove he can do that year after year to get respect in the league. He has the potential, but right now thats it. Spragan is solid but not what I'd call a star. The same with the rest of the LB's good players in role positions, but not IMO dominat players. We needed to upgrade the unit for sure, but Saban can only fix so many things at a time. I wouldn't be surprised to see a LB in the first round next year if there's one there worthy of the pick. Saban tried to upgrade the position with Peterson and Arrington, but it didn't work out and it's also why we will most likely be involevd in this years SD.

Newman Speaks Out, Felt Unappreciated

Keith Newman By Tim Yotter

Date: Jan 16, 2006

Like most of the Vikings’ 16 unrestricted free agents, linebacker Keith Newman doesn’t have a clue if the organization will bring him back, but he does know he felt disrespected last year and spoke out about it.

In 2005, many of Keith Newman’s defensive teammates considered him one of the leaders of the team. Maybe it was his willingness to speak his mind that put him in that standing, and it was that same unabashed free-wheeling speech that got him going during the last week of the season when talking about his prospects as a free agent this year.

“I don’t know what my chances are of being here. I guess it depends on if the organization wants me here,” Newman said.

But he knows he felt unappreciated by the Vikings last offseason. After earning a starting spot in the lineup in 2004, Newman was forced to watch Napoleon Harris get handed his starting position as a strongside linebacker.

The Vikings traded for Harris in the Randy Moss swap, and Newman felt the only reason Harris became an instant starter was because he was part of that trade.

“When the trade happened, they traded for a linebacker and it’s nothing against Napoleon Harris or anything, but he’s basically a Mike or a Will. He plays off the ball and they put him at my spot that I had last year,” Newman said. “It was never like I actually lost the spot. It was more like he was part of the Randy Moss trade, so that being said he was going to be out there. I don’t think I ever lost the job. I don’t think I even got beat out in training camp. I just think it was one of those situations that I couldn’t win to start off with. I still think to this day if we hadn’t been losing, in the predicament we were in – 1-3 after the first four games – I still might not have got in the starting lineup.

“I don’t have any hard feelings. I understand it’s a business, but it’s kind of tough to say you’re going to put your best players on the field and you can’t give a guy a reason he’s not on the field and you know somebody else is part of a trade.”

Sitting on the sidelines isn’t something to which Newman was accustomed. Since playing in four games in his rookie season, Newman worked his way into the starting lineups at Buffalo under former defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell and Atlanta before assuming that role with the Vikings.

In 2004 in Minnesota, Newman started 14 of 15 games, producing 71 tackles and 3.5 sacks. In 2005, he had 46 tackles and three sacks before missing the last three games with a sprained knee. The perception of him having a breakout year in 2005 as Harris’ eventual replacement is wrong.

“My problem is everybody says I had a better season this year than last year. The only thing is, last year nobody knew who I was coming in here even though I had started the last four or five years in the league. This year, I was sat on the bench for no reason, so when I come out and have the type of season I had, now everybody says, ‘Oh, Keith is having a strong season, he’s having this, he’s having that.’ But when you look at my numbers, my numbers are about the same from last year to this year,” Newman said. “Maybe it’s people paying more attention because I’m the guy who is outplaying the guy who was part of the Randy Moss trade – you figure it out, I don’t know. I wouldn’t say I had a better season this year than I did last year. If you look at my numbers, I would say I solidified the Sam linebacker spot. When I got in there this year, I solidified the Sam linebacker spot. To me, if you had a better year or not-so-good year, it’s all perception and how somebody perceives it.”

It was his beginning of the season, when he started only one of the first four games with Harris penciled in front of him that left Newman irritated all season. He didn’t speak out until the playoffs weren’t a possibility, and it’s unclear how he will be valued in the Vikings’ new “Tampa-2” defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin.

“If this organization sees me as being an integral part of this franchise, then they’re going to bring me back – so be it. … I’m not going to let somebody else’s decision play into my decision. I’ll do what’s best for Keith Newman and Keith Newman only,” he said.

While his performances in both the 4-3 and 3-4 defenses employed by Cottrell earned him the respect of his teammates, he realizes that nothing in free agency is given to players, just like he wasn’t just given his starting spot back at the beginning of the season.

Even the business of free agency seems to irk Newman, as he believes players have generally become more adjusted to the free-agent game than organizations.

“I understand it’s a business, but I don’t think teams understand it’s a business from the player’s standpoint. I think they know it’s a business from their standpoint and they do what’s best for them and players understand. But I don’t think the team understands when a player, i.e. a Corey Chavous, makes the type of decision he made last offseason when he decided not to come to the voluntary workouts. It’s voluntary, (so) why was a big deal made out of it?” Newman inquired. “The guys still came out in excellent shape and had a pretty solid season. Brian Williams, same thing. It’s one of those things where I think the player can never win. Organizations make business decisions and players make decisions, but when a player makes a decision, not only does the organization come down on them, the media also comes down on them. It’s kind of like the player is in a lose-lose situation.”

Maybe this offseason, Newman will get the respect he wants. Then again, with free agency, it’s anybody’s guess.
