i was listening to the radio early this evening and i heard jimmy ceffalo talkin bout that outside linebacker spot. and he said that zach thomas really likes keith newman mainly bc he is a very "nasty" player which would gives the fins a certain toughness they have been lacking. just a bit of info to go along with the poll question, for wat its worth.

That is what we need at that spot, some nastyness!!!!!

I really like the signing of Newman. A lot of people seem to think it's Donnie Spragan's job to lose right now but I'll be confident with whoever we put out there because he's probably the best player. I expect to see a lot of rotating at that spot however as Hodge is a better cover guy while Newman excells in pass rushing. That is the most interesting posistion heading into camp IMO.

I really still like the incumbent Donnie Spragan.
We know he has been spending time after hours in the building working out.

Maybe he is hearing footsteps, maybe he is trying to get better, stronger, faster. Huh?

Anyways if you go back over the footage from the last part of the season Spragan did a wonderful job gettting after the passer and held his own.

Newman and Hodge will push him no doubt.

I still think Spragan will win the spot.

These guys on defense are pumped this year. Who wouldn't be with Saban / Capers calling most of the shots?? Playing for two defensive coaches, who both have an uncanny way of maximizing the talent around them, is a dream type senario for any defensive player, even the older one's who still have something to prove get a chance when it comes to coaches like Saban / Capers....

Transforming the core of this defense from a "slowing fading 4-3", into a "top ranked 3-4 unit" has been a wonderful breath of fresh air in my opinion, and I wouldn't change back for anything. The 3-4 hybrid we're using is the wave of the future, and the more players Saban adds, the better we're going to become. It's just a matter of time before our defense becomes one of the NFL's top ranked units all around. Not just on the DL / LB, but in the secondary as well...

PHINZ RULE!!!!!

Three veterans with differant skill sets being coached by two defensive gurus. Should be a great camp battle.

Toughness is key when it comes to defense. We will probably use linebacker by commitee but i want Newman to start come sept 7.
