Would you be willing to trade our 2nd round picks to move to #20 for Kenny Phillips?

We can plug him into the Strong Safety spot and he and Jason Allen can really shore up our safety situation for many years. Not to mention making it easier for our subpar cornerbacks.

I understand the value of the 32nd pick. We essentially have two firsts. We can likely get someone like Antoine Cason from Arizona, or Brian Brohm maybe. I understand that.

I'm just thinking out loud. I am one of the believers who thinks that Kenny Phillips can be the best safety in the league one day. He's a REALLY smart safety (I don't mean wonderlic smart).

FYI, I say trade to #20 because the Redskins hold #21.

no. hes not worth it. if he is there at our 2b i would take him.

You think there's any chance he slips that far? What don't you like about him, if you don't mind me asking.

He's the top rated safety across the board, no?

Trading up into the 1st round is a very expensive exercise as the Browns showed last year. A talented DB will fall to #32 if we so desire to take one of them.

I thought he mediocre at the combine and may very well be there at 32. Even at that point there may be other positions I would rather have such as OL, corner, maybe TE over safety.

yes, but this is a bad safety group. phillips is smart, but hes not overly instinctive. hes not overly quick or fast. he isnt the biggest hitter. hes not much of that play maker. he doesnt really seem to have that fire either.

hes just OK, to me. definitely not worth 2 2nd round picks.

If Phillips fell to 32, I'd consider picking him, but I'd rather target Gibril Wilson in free agency.

This draft is loaded with talent in the 2nd-3rd round range this year. Trading away picks in that range would be a mistake, because no matter what there's going to be plenty of talent to choose from at those spots (Phillips quite possibly will be there anyways). If anything, we should trade down from 32 to get more picks in the 2-3 round range or perhaps even a #1 next year.

I'd only be willing to trade up for DRC.

I hear 'ya.

I really didn't watch UM football either of the last two years, but I watched a lot during Kenny's freshman year and I remember being astounded by him as an 18 year old. Apparently he hasn't blossomed. Must have hit his ceiling early.

After thinking about it, I do believe that assuming we take either Long first overall, or even Gholston, we can get a great DB at 32 and a QB with the 2nd 2nd.

With a smart front office, and I think we've got one now, our team can make out like bandits with our positioning in this draft.

I've still got a thing for Kenny, but I understand the arguments against him on this board.

I just hope he doesn't slip in the draft, we pass on him and he makes the pro bowl year one.

And regarding the tackling issue: I thought he was the best tackling safety in the draft. Isn't he like 6'2, 215 and didn't he run a 4.5?

I love Phillips, sixteen INT's in three years at The U. He's a very smart football player and he's not a thug at all, despite what people automatically assume of Miami players. He's a very soft-spoken, well-behaved guy who does his talking on the field. I don't think we should trade up for him but if he's there at #32 you have to consider him.

he is a good tackler. just not a big hitter.

Absolutely not. I definitely wouldn't trade up for him. We definitely need a CB more. If he's there at 2b, I'd consider it but I think Barrett in the 3rd would be much better value and just as much potential.

More than likely we'll get a slew of picks for the #32 pick and we'll sit back fat and happy while someone else burns their future for a change.
