This makes me feel better...

Dolphins receiver Kenny Stills shines in return to practice

James Walker, ESPN Staff Writer

DAVIE, Fla. -- It’s easy to overlook Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills. He had a quiet spring in organized team activities, and an injured calf has kept him out for most of training camp this summer.

Add in the fact backup receiver Rishard Matthews is having a strong three weeks of practices and the Dolphins also are awaiting the return of first-round pick DeVante Parker, and it’s easy to forget Stills and his potential in Miami’s offense.

On Monday, however, Stills offered a reminder of why the Dolphins acquired him in an offseason trade with the New Orleans Saints. Stills flashed several times, with a deep ball of 35-plus yards from quarterback Ryan Tannehill and at least three other receptions for first downs during Monday’s practice.

“I thought he looked good,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said of Stills. “Obviously, he’s been working hard doing what he’s capable of doing. But it’s good to get him out here working on the route concepts and the timing with receivers and quarterbacks. It’s good to have him.”

Stills was part of Miami’s offseason overhaul at wide receiver. The Dolphins traded linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and a third-round pick to the Saints for Stills, who had 95 receptions for 1,572 yards and eight touchdowns in two seasons with New Orleans.

It’s important for Stills to get healthy to start building a rapport with Tannehill. The two made several nice connections in team drills, including a deep pass on the sideline where Stills ran past cornerback Brice McCain for a big gain.

The quicker Stills gets acclimated, the faster he will find his place in Miami’s offense.

“I’ve done a really good job with the film study and keeping notes,” Stills said. “Yeah, I’m behind in a few things. But I feel like I’ve got experience. I played before, so I’m going to hop back in there and try to make some plays.”

Stills will continue to practice this week in an effort to see if he’s ready to make his Dolphins preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday.

Miami has a crowded group at receiver that includes Stills, Parker, Matthews, Jarvis Landry and veteran Greg Jennings. Only two players will start outside, and Landry will be in the slot. It’s important for Stills to show what he can do now to carve out his role for the regular season.

Stills is better then Mathews. No offense to Mathews he has been balling. But Stills is faster. A better route runner and has shown himself to be more consistent.

It will be hard to keep any of these WRs off the field. Just wait until Parker gets back. Parker is head and shoulders more talented then any of our WRs

I do not remember the last time the team had too many quality receivers. I like it.

It’s great to have him back,” Tannehill said. “We saw a flash of what he’s known for — catching the ball downfield and not only that but we made an adjustment to a cover zero right there in the two-minute drive, and he was able to see the adjustment and make the catch for a big play for us.

“He’s definitely a big-play receiver. I think that obviously his speed is tremendous, his route-running ability, the smoothness he has coming in and out of breaks is probably the smoothest that I’ve seen. So when you add that to what we have from the other guys, it really opens up another connection for us.”

Philbin said it was too early to determine whether Stills will play in the preseason game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday.

Philbin indicated it would depend in part on how Stills’ body responds to practicing Monday. But this was a positive step regardless.

“I thought he looked good,” Philbin said. “Obviously he’s been working hard doing what he’s capable of doing. But it’s good to get him out here and work on the route concepts and the timing with the other receivers and the quarterbacks obviously. So it was good to have him.”

This kid averaged 16 yards per catch in N'Awlins for two seasons. With him on one side and Parker on the other, Cobb, Cameron, and Miller won't have much to worry about from safeties creeping up to the line.

how nice that would be. i'll be happy with Landry though.

I was going to post the exact same thing. If the injury bug hits us, nice to know we'll be in good shape. I expect whoever doesn't start will still get ample playing time, should be able to throw off defenses big time...pick your poison

Stils needs to show in a game what Matthews already has, chemistry and skills to start.

Glad to see Stills bounce back so fast, he seems to fit the offense to a T.

Stills is featured in this month's Miami Living magazine, page 23.

Adam Beasley article on Stills return:

It was Kenny Stills Highlight Day at Dolphins camp Monday — before practice and during it.

Stills, the team’s top deep threat, practiced Monday for the first time in more than two weeks. A calf injury kept him out of action for most of training camp, which officially ended with Monday’s two-hour practice.

But Dolphins players had an idea Stills would be back when, on their way out to the practice field Monday, they came across clips of his big plays from college playing on weight room televisions.

They were right. He practiced fully Monday. And Stills went right back to making big plays.

He burned Brice McCain on a go route and caught a perfectly thrown ball from Ryan Tannehill. Stills finished practice with several receptions, showing little rust from his time off.

“It’s nice to have him back,” Tannehill later said. “I think we’ve missed him.”

Stills said of his time away: “It was extremely frustrating. During training camp is when a team’s building all of their chemistry. We’re working hard together and we’re building everything that we’re trying to build. It’s frustrating when you’re not out there. I’m just happy to be out there and getting some reps again.”

this is the guy I was waiting for...the extra dimension that wasn't on the field as yet. We have some nice WR's that have played, but this kid stretches the field and is different threat. Combined with Parker, man look out. Getting healthier!

You got this all backwards... Still has produced a lot more than Matthews at this level...

yes but with Brees in a different system. Matthes has been with Thill for years and in Lazors offense last year and it shows in games. Stills has not shown anything in games.
