Kerry Collins joins Colts

Without Manning that is a last place team. If I was Bill Polian, I'd put Manning on IR and take the 4-12 record. Draft Andrew Luck, sit him behind Manning for a year or 2, and then continue dominating the AFC South for another 10 years. If Manning misses significant time, the Colts getting Luck is a very real possibility...

Kerry Collins isnt much of an upgrade over Painter.

Yeah except you completely disregard the fact they just gave Manning the highest paid contract in the league for 6 years, 18 million per year. I doubt Manning will agree to go to IR and they would not draft his replacement after giving this guy such a huge contract. There's a salary cap, they're not going to tie up all their finances on 2 quarterbacks and have one of them making 30 million guarantee to back up their current franchise QB.

You also just completely disregarded the fact that there is now a rookie wage scale. That first pick is no longer a huge financial burden, it is very reasonable. Manning is 36, he is almost done. He is never going to see the last few years of that contract. If he makes it to 40 I'd be seriously shocked. My guess is we are about to witness Manning's next to last season. Why wouldn't you prepare for the retirement of your 36 year old superstar quarterback? They saw what happened to Marino and the Dolphins first hand, they were in our division when he retired. If they have a top pick and a chance at one of the franchise QBs, I'd put money on the fact that they would take one and sit him behind Manning while he finishes up his career. That's simply smart GMing...

Would need to tank worse tha 4-12 to get Luck. There are far, far worse teams. Collins is good enough to hold them over until Peyton comes back. It's not like it's a serious injury he has.

Anyway, he just signed a 5 year 90million deal where he gets $69million in the first 3 years. Granted it's an NFL contract, but it's clear the Colts are all in with Manning for at least the next 3 years.

Even if not Luck, there is Barkley and a few other first round QBs. They won't have to tank the season, if Manning misses significant time the season is going to be a trainwreck. I agree that they go with Manning the next 2-3 years. However, Polian is a good enough GM that he knows Manning's career is winding down. Especially with the Packers drafting a first round QB and seamlessly transitioning to him and not missing a beat, I simply don't see how Polian doesn't have the same thing in mind. They are a team no one is considering in the QB derby, but who will probably be a major player...
