MIAMI GARDENS - Dolphins weakside linebacker Kevin Burnett was a late-minute scratch for the exhibition opener against Tampa Bay.
Burnett participated in team’s warm up but left the field before stretching concluded and was escorted by a trainer.
The injury has not been specified, but Burnett had a compression sleeve on his left leg in practice this week. He also underwent arthroscopic surgery on that same leg in the offseason.
Burnett, whose 106 stops last season make him the Dolphins top returning tackler, was replaced by Gary Guyton, a four-year veteran the Dolphins signed as a free agent this offseason.
Guyton served as a starter until the first-team unit was pulled midway through the second quarter.
But Burnett wasn't the only Dolphins player who suffered an injury Friday night.
Defensive lineman Tony McDaniel, Miami’s top backup defensive tackle, suffered a knee injury on a goal line in the second quarter. However, McDaniel returned to the game a couple snaps later.
First-team quarterback David Garrard didn’t play in the exhibition opener because he’ll undergo surgery this on a troublesome knee in the coming days....
Receivers Clyde Gates (hamstring) and Brian Hartline (calf) didn’t play. Neither did tailback Marcus Thigpen (leg), safety Kelcie McCray (broken foot) and offensive guard Ray Feinga (illness).

lets hope its not serious, i dont trust guyton at all

Dolphins depth at linebacker is absolutely atrocious. Guyton is the only backup Miami has (and he's not very good). And Trusnick and Spitler, while okay on special teams, are far too stiff and non athletic to stick in a starting lineup. They will get totally run over and targeted against starting offenses in this league

I said it 2+ months ago. Expect a big downswing with the defense this year. Losing Mike Nolan was a serious blow to the team. He had the talent as a D-coordinator to make some crappy players look decent. That element is no longer here. I am no fan of the new guy calling this defense. This secondary will also get torched.

Mike Nolan will prove to be a big loss this season.

I'm not ready to make any judgments about how Kevin Coyle calls a game.

still a little worried about that myself but he worked with dick lebaue and mike zimmer so hopefully he has an idea what he is doing

If your basing this off of one preseason game with a very vanilla defense plan then you might as well as look at the 31 points ATL gave up last night.
