The Observer reported in July that, according to two sources close to the situation, former Panthers guard Kevin Donnalley obtained the banned steroid testosterone from Shortt. Former Carolina receiver Nathan Black told the paper in May that he was a patient of Shortt briefly, but did not obtain steroids from the doctor.

According to the paper, Shortt said in March that he had prescribed steroids in low doses to patients when medically necessary for healing and repair -- and not to athletes for performance enhancement.

Shortt is under investigation by the DEA and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division for possible illegal steroids distribution.

Now we know why he never panned out in Miami... It seems he may have taken them to get a huge contract then perhaps stopped?...

More of this story will come out...

This isn't really surprising. I would guess that a very large % of the guys in the NFL are using performance enhancing drugs. As we learned in the BALCO case, the guys making these synthetic drugs are two steps ahead of the people testing for them. Most experts say that current testing is only capable of detecting 10-15% of users, at best. And if all the NFL does is urine testing, then it also means they are not testing for HGH, because it can't be detected without a blood test. Also, as part of their steroid testing, the NFL only considered it a positive test if a player had 6 times the normal human level of testosterone. This year, they have lowered the threshold to 4 times the normal human level. The NFL's testing policy is tougher than that of MLB, but that's not saying much. And don't forget, our own David Boston tested positive for steroids last season, and got suspended for 4 games.

Can that be said with any certainty? The Panthers had a steroid problem in the past couple years, and it looks to be their training staff trying to get them back on the field.

I find it kind of interesting...

that while I was reading this thread, the advertising in the thread list was for steroids. Hmmmm....

cant remember which channel but on HBO or Showtime... watch that COSTAS show... just saw it today and that Dr was interviewed along with some players..

boston was using an illeagle supplement, not steroids.

And Barry Bonds thought he was taking flaxseed oil. And Gary Sheffield thought he was using arthritis cream. The supplements that are banned act like steroids, or metabolize into steroids once in your system. You can't believe what the players say. So far, 9 major leaguers have been suspended for steroids, and not one of them claims to know how they tested positive.

The reason why there is no huge outcry about steroid use in football is because usage is so widespread. It's not normal for these guys to be as big and as fast as they are.

was he really bad? he started when ricky ran for 1,800, no? i'd wager he was better than the current crop of guards we sport....
