Kevin Shaffer from the Browns wants out of Cleveland since they drafted Joe Thomas. The teams asking price at most is a 4th round pick. That isn't too bad for a starting LT that's 6'5, 320 lbs and only 27 years old. I think this guy might be the answer at LT so Vernon Carey can stay where he is best at RT. What does everybody think??

He's an okay player nothing to be excited about. Cleveland way overpaid for him and I'm not even sold on him being a LT.

Head coach Cam Cameron said that right tackle Vernon Carey will enter the team's next mini-camp as the starting left tackle.

Trust Cam.

I do trust Cam and I know that he said Vernon Carey will play LT, but he can easily be a pro bowler next year at RT. The problem is we don't have a LT that can keep him there. That's where Shaffer comes in. The Browns did sign him to a big contract where they payed him a big bonus. That means his base salary is low and we wouldn't have to pay him that much. I think Shaffer at LT and Carey at RT is the best possibility as of right now.

Well if Shaffer was the real deal, why did Cleveland feel they needed the 3rd overall pick to replace him ?? No more taking other teams retreads to fill our line.. I like what we have better .
We already signed a tackle this offseason if you remember.. What makes you think Shaffer is better than him ? Cleveland had the 29th in passing offense, and 31st in run offense with their line, which sucked .. And LT is the most important position for a line to be decent .. No thanks

develope Vernon in to a LT. Won't cost us anything.

Just like that huh? wont cost us anything? wait and see, this is May 1. what if Carey gets hurt? ever think of that? The line has alot more bodies to it now, but LT is obviously a sticking sore spot. We better hope that Carey sticks at LT or anything we do on offense will never ever be right, whether we have speed or whatever. If you cant block the other team for four quarters, they beat us.

Vernon Carey was tried at LT before and it didn't work out. He wasn't good at it and he didn't like playing that position. They may be switching him because at present there are no other options. Makes you wonder what caused them to change their mind on Alabie at LT? I just hope he can adapt but its difficult playing a position your not comfortable with. It would be great if they can make it work because that way we have a LT sewed up for years.

Carey is improved. He's as good as MacIntosh. I'm happy with him at Left Tackle. He is much better than all of our other Tackles.

The difference between now and then is he is further developed now.. Plus, he now has a good NFL season under his belt.. Which exudes more confidence to make the transition now than before.

i'm not saying Shaffer will be a gift from heaven, but for at most a 4th rounder and much of his contract already paid through bonuses, FO should give it a thought. O-linemen can drop like flies and the more we have, the better off we are. plus he's still only 27

Carey never had success playing left tackle, thats why he couldn't win the LT job at Miami U. I don't think carey ever had a problem with confidence, just his weight and does not have the feet that most LT's have. Watch Levie Brown in college and compare him to Carey in college. Similar sized guys, similar speed and simililar strength but watch the movement and Brown blows him away at the college level. Looks like we are blowing up the oline one more time. Good thing is they were not good in the first place, still wished we had drafted a tackle to throw into the mix.

Yes he is better than Alabi at any position.

There's a reason Cleveland drafted Joe Thomas. They gave up a whoppin 54 sacks last season and Shaffer was beaten on quite a regular basis. He's a below average LT at best and I'd be really upset if Mueller made the same mistake of acquiring a washed-up tackle from one of the league's worst o-lines as Saban did.

Generally speaking, you don't get a decent LT in FA or via trade. Never happens. No team ever let a good LT hit FA. No team ever trades a good one, either. Shaffer might actually make a halfway decent RT, but there's really no way I'd give up a draft pick for him or pay him LT money (like the weasel stupidly paid Shelton).

Carey has shown promise at the LT spot in the past. On e of the reasons he was moved was because Stockar Mcdougle and Damion Mcintosh both could not handle the spot. Mcintosh only knows how to play LY and McDougle sucked.Like someone pointed out earlier it would not cost us anything. All we need is for Alabi to be able to play RT. We could move Shelton to LG and Hadnot to RG.Samson Satele could play the C postion. I think this would be a very good line in my opinion.
