It’s the OL analysis power by TIVO and brought to you by the sometimes flawed but always looking eyes of Phinkev. Only had time to do one series, but if enough are interested, I'll try for a second drive tommorow.

Actually, took a while to get to our first offensive snap.

Drive 1

1. Situation: 1st and 10 from the 24.
Description: Pass to McMike, incomplete. Penalty for illegal formation.
Note: Pro-set, 1 TE. Scheme leaves outside rusher for the backs to block.

Carey: Actually gets beat to the inside and Anderson bails him out.
Anderson: Good initial block, hands off the Hadnot and helps Carey. Pretty good.
Hadnot: Doesn’t really get a good stick on his guy. But, good enough.
James and Shelton: Successfully double team the DE.

Bottom line: I bet you didn’t see this coming. Anderson did a good job on the first play and Vernon Carey did not.

2. 1st and 15.
Description: Quick pass to Wr. Incomplete.

Bottom line: Play was to quick to really look at OL, though Jenkins is a beast and shoots the gap really fast between Hadnot and James.

3. 2nd and 15

Description: Pep to Brown for a first.
Notes: Shotgun set, 3 WR .

Carey: Gets back well and his guy never gets close to threatening.
Anderson: Gets a block on the DT, but is driven back into the pocket. Holds him out long enough.
Hadnot: Goes to help James who doesn’t need it. Should have helped Anderson.
James: Late out of his stance but does fine on his guy and rides him out of the pocket.
Shelton: Similar to Carey, handles guy fine.

Bottom Line: The only real threat was off Anderson’s guy and not too much there. LB just forgets to cover Ronnie who comes out of the backfield. Good play.

4. 1st and 10 from the 38.
Description: Short out to Beasley for about 5.
Notes: Two TEs and 1 Wr.

Carey: Turns in and knocks the DT (Anderson’s Guy) down the line. Fun to watch.
Anderson: Good initial block and then Carey hits his guy from the side.
Hadnot: and James: Double the other DT. Looks fine.
Shelton: Easily handles his guy.
Peele: Not much to do for the TE here.

Bottom line: Interesting blocking scheme. The DE over Carey is actually left for Ronnie Brown to block. Not the best block in the world, but good enough and the FB slips into the flat behind them for a reception.

5. 2nd and 5
Description: Brown for a loss.
Notes: 3 Wrs, 1 TE, no full back. Ronnie goes over the right side.

Carey: Stays in front of the DE,. Ok.
Anderson: Pulls and doesn’t really block anyone.
Hadnot: Disaster. Just misses the DT. Who shoot the gap and nails Brown.
James: Goes to the second level, and blocks LB.
Shelton: Gets a decent block on 77.

Bottom Line: First let me say that Fox gave us a great camera angle on this play. Hadnot just wiffs and his guy blows up the play. Looks really bad. On a side note, Carey should be turning his guy out, but the DE is able to slide into the hole and while Carey is still engaging him, the movement appears to block up the running lane had Ronnie actually had a chance to run. On top of which there is a corner blitz that is unblocked and gets in on the tackle. Ugly play.

6. 3rd and 9.
Description: Pep to Booker for a short gain, no first down.
Notes: Shotgun, 3 WR,

Brown: Picks up the blizing LB.
Carey: Gets the DE.
Anderson: Bounces up and down a few times, and tries to look busy.
Hadnot: Tries to really drive his guy back, but loses him and James bails him out.
James: Gets Hadnot's guys after he gets by Hadnot.
Shelton: Gets beat around the outside, but Pep fells it and steps up.

Bottom Line: There is an unblocked blitzing LB that goes around RT. Otherwise it was an adequate job by the line except for Shelton. I’m guessing Hadnot wanted to pop someone after the previous play, but he really doesn’t deliver the blow he is trying to deliver.

Some Final Thoughts:
Really disappointed in general with the line play to this point. Carey was ok, and Anderson was actually ok so far. Hadnot was bad and Shelton may get someone killed. I’ll look at another drive tomorrow.

I can't break it down like some of you can, but here's what I noticed:

Our OL performed mediocre in pass protection, and they absolutely stunk up the joint in run blocking.

thanks, i'm kinda cringing at the thought of the next few series, should be interesting reading but probably not too flattering for our boys

thanks again Kev!

Going up against that D-Line shed some light on things.

I admit, I thought they'd be good running and weak passing, not vice-versa.
Hope they improve.

Sounds like all of the B. Anderson critics need to find a new skapegoat this weekend. R. Hadnot perhaps???...

Our newly "shuffled" OL isn't cutting it at this stage, and it goes well beyond RG B. Anderson in my opinion. Carey / Hadnot / and Shelton should be getting slammed for their lack of effort / production just the same as Anderson. None of them are playing very well....

I loved the thought of Hadnot starting at C during mini-camp. Today I think moving Hadnot to C was a mistake. He's the main reason our interior OL is so soft in my opinion. He's getting dominated against the bigger DT's, and that's causing all kinds of confusion along the rest of the OL....

Once McKinney is healthy, it's time to put him back at C, and move Hadnot back to RG. I think that's a given at this stage, and we looked much better a year ago than we do today....

On top of that, with DC coming off serious injury, we can't afford to have any further setbacks on the OL this year, we need the strongest unit out on the field, and the current starters aren't looking like the group we expected to see when we imagined the final product.....

Call me crazy, but I'm glad we are being exposed right now. The thing I love most about Saban is the way he makes people accountable for their actions. I think the more our line struggles the Saban gets on them, I expect the line to get a lot of attention this next week of practice and we look better next week. I think we will struggle early anyways because of all the shifting of players and the new ones added and MM playcalling will take time for the to get comfortable with. I think they will settle down by week four or five and start to pick it up. I have no worries about our Oline at this point, if it were week five of the season I'd be concerned, but not right now.

I can't imagine being an offensive lineman in the NFL, playing on national television, getting paid sooo much money....and then getting my a** kicked play after play by Kris Jenkins. Did Marino talk to B. Anderson about Nutrisystem?

The pass blocking was actually very good. Carey was winning the battle over Peppers rather convincingly, and that is key to his progress, that he could handle an elite level end. Shelton also played well. The interior was what let us down. On pass protection the interior was adequate, but on run blocking the interior was dreadful. I can't pinpoint if it was the center not helping over or if it was the guards not able to sustain their blocks. The guard play has to improve if we are going to make a mess this year.

I concur, Blitz. I said Anderson was bad and the rest were "ok", but they all made some mistakes and just got handled at times last night. Anderson actually looked better, but it was a moot point.

I think they'll have some options when Toledo and Seth return plus I expect them to improve a bit overall, so I think the middle will actually get sorted out and shaped up to some degree.

Not sure about the play at T. Need to watch the game again.

one thing i think you have to remember is that this is possibly the best DL in the NFL. they are damn good and fox is also a great defensive coach.

the second thing is, if i remember correctly, our OL sucked at the beginning of last year, but played great on our 6 game run at the end.

i am disappointed with their play recently, but if i factor those to things in i feel a little better. i think they will definitely improve as they play together, hopefully it doesn't take as long as it did last year.

Concerned about the line, it was very poor. BUt Carolinas DL is amazing. It's not the same line as last year with Jenkins back from injury. That man was a total beast. We will not see a line like that all year, but to be a Superbowl team we need to fair better than that. We have to have some running room and you'd think we would, having fullbacks that are supposed to be very good blockers.

Amen brother I totally agree! I think most of the stench came from the special teams though:wink:
