Welcome to Kevin’s OL analysis, powered by TIVO. For the record, the analysis is my own, and I am not an expert or a former coach so keep that in mind.

Lets take a look at the first few series and see how the big boys are doing, Those that are new to this analysis, I take each play and see how each lineman is doing.

Drive 1:

Play 1 - 1st and 10

Description: Ronnie Brown off RG for a couple
Notes: Two TE formation with a fullback.

McMichael: Looking for someone to block.
Carey: Gets an initial push on the DE and loses him in space.
Anderson: Ugh. Gets beat to the inside by the DT who forces Ronnie to adjust in the backfield.
Hadnot and James: Double Team the other DT, were doing fine, though not exactly dominating.
Shelton: Gets his guy pretty well.

Bottom Line: Anderson getting beat disrupted the play forced Ronnie out of the right running lane. He still made something out of not much though.

Play 2: 2nd and 7

Description: Pep to Chambers for a short gain.
Notes: Two TE, no fullback.

Carey: Good drop, good position. Fine.
Anderson/Hadnot: Double the DT and are doing fine.
James: Gets beat to the inside by 92. Really poor footwork.
Shelton: Gets his guy pretty well.

Bottom Line: Everyone is good in pass protect except James who gets beat very fast. Pep unloads under pressure forcing the poor throw and a short gain despite the fact no one was near Chambers.

Play 3: 3rd and 3

Description: False Start.
Notes: Shotgun set. Max protect 3 WR with Welker in slot.

False start. Hadnot missed the count and was late to snap. Anderson was called, but Hadnot’s mistake.

Play 4: 3rd and 8

Description: False Start.
Notes: Shotgun set. 4 WR

Description: False start again. Impossible to see who moved, but Anderson was called.

Play 5: 3rd and 13

Description: Incomplete to Chambers.

Carey: Gets beat to the outside. Forces Pep up in the pocket.
Anderson: No one to block, but does give LB a mean look.
Hadnot: Does a nice 1 on 1 with DT and helps when James’ guy stunts.
James: Initially good, but his guy rolls off to Hadnot who ends up blocking two.
Shelton: His guy gets chipped by TE (McMichael?) So easy play for the LT.

Bottom Line: Carey gets beat and tries to push his guy past Pep. Pep probably could have taken more time as the DE goes down, but the initial pressure spooks him forcing the incompletion.

Drive 2: 1st and 10 at the 25.

Description: Play fake Pep sacked.
Note: Pro-set

Carey: Gets another speed rush, handles it better, though is still a little slow.
Anderson: Just gets abused to the inside. Wow, that’s bad.
Hadnot and James: Double Team a DT. Ok.
Shelton: Best performance on the play. Handles spin move well.

Bottom line: Anderson gets killed here. Worth noting that the sack is made by the LB who fills the hole that Pep steps up into to avoid Anderson’s man. The LB should be blocked by Ronnie Brown, but it looks like Brown loses track of the QB. Either way, Brown needs to do better than that half hearted effort at a block . Brown did get the fumble though.

2nd and a cab ride.

Description: Sack again.
Note: Double TE, one back set (Brown).

Carey: His guy is chipped off and late rushes through the A gap. Not a factor, but might have been if the matter wasn’t settled.
Anderson: Gets abused again. This time by 92. Just bulls past him.
Hadnot and James: Double other DT. Fine.
Shelton: Again a nice job by the LT.

Bottom line: Anderson. What can I say. He’s been awful.

3rd and a plane flight.

Description: Short pass to Brown who runs a bit but is well short of the 1st.
Carey: Fine, though McMike hangs around to help.
Anderson and Hadnot: Anderson gets some help this time. Ok together.
James: Ok, hard to tell. Bad camera work.
Shelton: Gets beat. Sigh. Forces check down.

Bottom Line: Wow, what a bad series. Almost everyone sucked.

Series 3: 1st and 10 from the 20.

Play 1

Description: Ronnie over RG for about 4.
Note: Interesting formation has Shelton outside of Carey at a classic TE position. McMichael looks like he is at LT. Line from right to left is Shelton, Carey, Anderson, Hadnot (Center), James, McMichael. The Bucs overload the weakside.

Shelton: Down blocks and gets a good push.
Carey: Appears to get a late start, slips to second level and gives a weak effort on a LB.
Anderson: Gets a good push on a DT. One of his better plays.
Hadnot: Turns out his guy nicely.
James: Pulls into the hole, doesn't seem to get much of a block, is really to high. Needs to bend his knees more.
McMike: Guy blows by him on the outside, but the play develops just fast enough for it not to matter.

Bottom Line: Looks like a clever play design that puts a mass of big bodies over one side, Ronnie bulls his way through. Should mention a nice block from the fullback 40 to clear some room.

Play 2

Description: Pep called for intentional grounding as he is about to be sacked.
Notes: 3 receiver set, backs in the I. McMichael lines up as a full back. Play fake.

Carey: His guy is chipped off by McMike, not much to do.
Anderson: His guy drops into coverage. Not much to do.
Hadnot and James: Double the DT and handle a stunt from the DE. Pretty good. Anderson comes into help at the end as well.
Shelton: Lets the bliting cornor go right by him. The LB follows in the same lane and nails Pep. He might not have had responsibility for the corner, but seems like he was a bit unsure of his role here.

Bottom Line: Tampa is running a zone blitz here. They drop off of the right side and over load the left and it works pretty well. The corner goes right by Shelton and is picked up by Brown. But the LB follows a second later and Shelton has moved to help James and Hadnot, who really don’t need the help and Brown is already occupied so things get ugly fast.

Got to give Tampa some props as it is a well designed scheme.

Play 3: Third and a train ride.

Description: Screen to Brown for not enough.
Notes: 3 Wrs, two backs beside the QB though McMike is one of them.

Carey: Gets behind on a speed rush but recovers.
Anderson: Nothing to do till late.
Hadnot: Initial block gets out on the screen. Pretty good mobility.
James: Same as Hadnot. Also pretty nifty.
Shelton: Good drop loses balance a little on the bull rush, but it doesn’t matter.

Bottom Line: Tampa drops back and plays a zone coverage. Not much here for the screen play.

Final Thoughts:

I suppose if I wanted to feel better, I’d do the next drive since we go down the field. But, I’m tired.

I’m really not feeling to bad about things. Tampa was fast and tricky and they took advantage of us here a few times. But, most of the problems are fixable.

Carey continues to be good. Not great, but good.
Anderson has issues. I wonder if Toledo might have beaten him out if he had not been injured.
Hadnot is the best player on the line by my eyes, but not by too much. He is definitely going to be a keeper.
James: Doesn’t make to many mistakes, but not really a difference maker.
Shelton was actually better in review than I thought, but still not making me think its been a huge upgrade over Mac.

If they can be disciplined and communicate this line could be good together, but there is little room for error.

Good analysis. I should add that the false starts were a combination of this unit not being together very long and using the silent count for the first time, thus the timing was off. Once Hadnot stop holding the ball for an extended period of time and Anderson got over his initial jitters, the offense started to click.

I still feel the O-Line has a ways to go and hopefully this unit will get more time together so they can start to gel.

Nitpicky corrections but I do believe Anderson gets a failing grade on Play 5 of Drive 1. He failed to pick up the stunting RDT, instead mirroring a LB who was actually just coming up to cover Ronnie Brown out of the backfield. The whole right side of the line collapsed as a result, whereas had he stuck with the zone, Daunte would have been able to avoid a falling Greg Spires with a quick step up in the pocket (Dan Marino style). Instead Daunte's forced to start wanting to run to the left, forces a hurried throw to Chambers, misses him incomplete.

And also on the second false start my DVR shows pretty clear Bennie was the first and only one to move.

I'm not trying to just pick on Bennie Anderson here, just because I predicted he'd be bad. If I was, then I would not have had such nice words to say about him after the Jax game, I'd have just picked on him and taken a whole glass-half-empty approach. But the reality is that Bennie hardly did ANYTHING right in the first quarter against the Bucs.

very interesting analysis, thanks for taking the time to do it. i haven't seen a game yet and look forward to the carolina game. i really believe in houck and hope by game 4-5 that our line is gelling and becoming a force..

Looks like nothin a little time won't cure. Good read thanks for the work. I think the one place I would keep an eye on would be Anderson.

Problem with Anderson we might not have a better player to replace him and Toledo would probably have fared no better as a rookie.I wish we could move Mcintosh or Carey inside.Carey especially seems more suited for guard in the long run.

McIntosh was our most consistent linemen last year from what I remember and why he was resigned IMO. I wouldn't mind seeing him playing guard if Anderson can't get it together.

Has anybody considered Mike Pearson at guard? He is fast, athletic, and damn big, as well as a good pass blocker and a more than sufficient run blocker...unfortunately he is 3rd on the depth chart at left tackle

Toledo was impessing the coaches before he got hurt, but there's good news, I read in the Herald on Sunday that he should be good to go on Thursday.

Nice analysis, thanks for the effort. Lets hope Houck can get these guys on the same page, DC needs a little extra time back there until he gets more comfortable with his receivers and their route running tendencies.
