On defense, it will have more to do with scheme and strategy than who starts at safety. The Fins coaching staff are forced to pick their poison, period. Therefore, here are my keys to victory for our D:
- Must get pressure AND be able to stop the run with front 7 only
- Must play zone majority of time, double covering both Moss/Welker
- Our Nickle and Dime package must make sure tackles with WR's in front
of the coverage
- Be patient, dont panic as Pats receivers make catches underneath the
zone...be able to come up and punish Randy Moss...who does not like
contact. Welker must be jammed hard at the LOS and re-directed
- No big plays i.e. over 20 yards
- Force passes to the TE vs WR's
Special note: D-Line must win in the trenches, if not, we lose.
On offense, it will be much more difficult. Pats have superior D talent vs Fins' O talent. Fins have to come up with a surprise against Pats D, which unfortunately, wont be a surprise for very long against this veteran team.
Without balance attack, there will be many 3 and outs and our D will gas.
- Must win on 1st down, i.e. 3 yds minimum
- Must convert 50% of 3rd downs
- No turnovers
- Must be able to "threaten" with downfield pass i.e. one pass +20 yds
- Use spread formations with draws and screens to offset pass rush
- Ronnie Brown must get untracked
Special teams, the hidden yardage, this is the tipping point. If all else is stalemated, SP Teams must provide game changing field position and sudden change within the game.
- Kickoffs have to set LOS at 30yd line at least, nothing inside 20 ydline
- Punts is key to changing field position battle, Bess has to break a couple
returns for more than 15 yards.
- Take the points early, that means we'll kick the long field goals.
That's it. Easier said than done.
I just hope we dont see any more bonehead plays, personnel groupings, and clock management.
