Sturgis had a disappointing year. He was OK on kick offs (#17) but, his FG accuracy of 80% was #27. Miami has a history of really good kickers from Garo, etc. Maybe the best in the history of the NFL.

So, do e give Sturgis one more year to prove he belongs or, look for another off the dumpster diving?

I'm leaning towards one more year but, have little to back it up.

We've had this conversation before. I even made a chart to show the Dolphins kickers who were the most accurate.

Garo was not at all our most accurate but he was clutch. Really Jay Feely was our most accurate but I didn't have him on the list since he wasn't here very long.

If someone beats Sturgis out in training camp or a better kicker gets cut by another team I'm all for replacing Sturgis. From 40+ yards he's one of the worst kickers we've ever had. He's 6/13 from 50+ with only a career long of 54. There are a lot of college kickers that don't make it to the NFL with career longs of 54 yards.

He was hurt last year and we got nothing better. The real problem isn't sturgis, its our inability to score td's and the terribly passive playcalling once we get into "fg range", which philbin seems to believe is anywhere past midfield. Even the best of kickers have down years. he still has talent. We just need to stop running the ball on first and second down only to end up 3rd and long from the 40. Then they tee off, sack tannehill, and we end up watching sturgis try a 57 yarder that has very little chance. We can't even block well enough to get clean 40 yard looks half the time.

Olindo Mare!!! Pete Stoyanovich!!! couple my favorites ever... Garo Yepremian was long time ago and solid, clutch as said above!!! though Fuad Reveiz wasnt with us too long was a great one. another older decent one was Uw von Schamann.

best part of al lthese guys is that all basically add up many many years of great kicking all together... decades of!!! where many other teams have a plethora of kickers, we were stable and had the pleasure to have consistency of great careers in the position!!!

Remember when we dumped Carpenter? He has been a great kicker ever since for the Bills. The kickers we have looked at like Hocker and the guy frim RPI have been horrible. Might as well stick with Sturgis unless a better kicker gets cut before the season starts.

When I saw we brought in a kid from RPI to compete I couldn't believe it, I didnt even know they had a team I grew up not far from there.

Caleb began last preseason with an injured leg. I'd like to see what he looks like fully healthy this year. However, I'd like to pick up another kicker as competition, as a backup scenario if Caleb doesn't look good.
My preference is to give him another shot, because he was money in college football and he should be capable of being a solid reliable kicker. I haven't given up hope that Sturgis can be very good (but I'm an optimist by nature).

I honestly don't trust him, but bring in some competition for him and let the best man win. Only two more years till Roberto Aguayo is available?

I was opposed to getting rid of Carpenter, and dare I say Philbin would have had a winning record if we'd kept him. Sturgis is A full 10% worse than Carp on 40+ yard attempts when it counts. There's no reason that he's still on the team other than Philbin sucks and this is one of many glaring reason why he won't be here next year.
