Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso needed to have surgery after breaking his right thumb in a December loss to the Ravens and he was reportedly back at the doctor earlier this month for another operation.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that Alonso had a second surgery on the thumb after the team’s January 8 loss to the Steelers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Caplan reports that the recovery timeline is six weeks, which would leave Alonso ready in plenty of time for the start of offseason work.

We got pretty lucky that he stayed healthy this year...might not be so lucky next season.

I was wondering why the heck he went from a small cast with a hand wrap to a club late in the season

tough guy...playing thru that

Some forward thinking on a longterm extension for Kiko would make a lot of sense this offseason. Kiko could make a lot of money in South Florida off the field with his Cuban roots. First round tender should come in just under 4 million, you could probably get this deal done in that 4 year/18 million range wih some guarantees for Kiko. He's a young piece you would like to keep around.

I would love to see kiko play with some talent around him.

Is Kiko a guy who could bulk a little without losing speed and agility? He could use some more meat.

He's listed at 6'3" 239 but I swear he's more like 6'1" 220. He looks way too small for linebacker. He has more the size of a strong safety.

Wishful thinking that we can get this dude for less than $6-7mil/year coming off the year he had (which was solid, not great, but splashy plays always dominate when contract time comes).

No, he's every bit 6'3, and if you notice he is actually taller than some opposing offensive players listed at 6'4. He's light, so I can see the weight being below 239, but he definitely is 6'3.

He's also gotta play well in 2017 and not be injured to ensure he is capable of that type of deal.

By extending him early, it provides Kiko with some guaranteed insurance and yes it does mean he takes a discount from his high ceiling earning potential. Looking at the AAV's of inside linebackers in the NFL. The split from top tier and elite to average and others is 7 million (Derrick Johnson . . . bottom of the top tier) and 5.5 million (Dqwell Jackson . . . top of the average and others tier).

Kiko at 4.5 million AAV with a nice signing bonus and a guaranteed first 2 years and no state income tax and his injury history . . . could certainly be a possibility. If Miami wants to sweeten the deal and make it 4/20 instead of 4/18 . . . that's pretty much where is market is . . . IMO.

No way kiko should sign an extension that averages $4.5 mil per

Miami may not want kiko in 2018 anyways...tender him and buy yourself another year for evaluation purposes...pay the $3 mil and be done with it

Kiko the player should bet on himself...for better or worse

The guy that could be approached about an extension that is off the radar is jay ajayi...i could see miami making a good faith throw a bone at the kid pay raise there...whether or not he bites i dont know...it is 2 years before he would be a free agent as a 5th round pick...and after next year miami could retain him with a high tender one which im sure right now they plan on...but still...extension would be more likely after this year but i wouldnt rule it out...hes earned a pay raise
