I think Sheppard is a better starting linebacker than Thomas was a starting guard. Well at least I would say I think Thomas' mistakes seemed a lot more glaring. With Thomas it seems every once in a while he might hold is own or even win his match up on a play, but when he gets beat there's no question who won the battle. It almost seems like once he gets beat a little he just stops fighting and gets steam rolled or raced around. I think he needs a fresh start with another team if he's ever going turn in a decent player. It's like a boxer that stops giving much effort once he loses the first two or three rounds.
Early days but this is great news. Kiko was dominant as a middle linebacker for Buffalo in his rookie season and showed great instincts when he won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award across the whole NFL. We have been wandering the desert for a decent middle linebacker since Zach Thomas retired. If Kiko is healthy and his strength and power is returning, we could get lucky. He also has something to prove after tasting initial success and then dealing with injury and dual surgeries. There was a reason Chip Kelly traded LeSean McCoy for him last year in Philly (remember Chip approached Buffalo to do the trade). Chip knew first hand how good he was in Oregon. Good luck Kiko - you deserve it.
