Kiko Alonso is excited about going back to the same defensive system and the same position.

Middle linebacker.

A source close to Alonso tells The Miami Herald (me) that Alonso doesn’t want to move from the middle linebacker spot in 2017. He enjoys playing middle linebacker the most and believes that’s his spot, the source said. Alonso, by the way, has on separate occasions also told me he prefers to play middle linebacker but would consider doing whatever was best for the team.

So voicing a desire to not move is new. And it runs counter to the idea the Dolphins would this offseason consider moving Alonso outside where he was productive in Buffalo as a rookie -- the decision depending on whom the Dolphins add to the linebacker corps in free agency or the draft.

now watch us land Foster in round 1

Ok, then leave him there. Changes my draft idea from Cunningham. We should go with a WLB now. Maybe a SLB. Idk, but if kiko wants to stay in Miami at MLB I say give him an extension and move onto the next need: his LB partners.

Sorry, whats best for the team is the answer based on who we can sign, Kiko does say he believes that as well so...

his games more mike than weak in terms of instincts and I think you are gonna find his feel for the position is better inside...more comfortable...I'm expecting less return in terms of play making with kiko shifted outside should Miami go that route...plus some holes in the carry coverage aspect of things

I'd rather put a higher level athlete outside at weak personally but none of these weak options are murderous run defenders so the results would still be uneven not that they wont be if we added a thumper mike type either

In reality the whole LB group needs a re-do, might take two years, but it would be nice to start.

they have to stop dicking around with these udfa types and expecting different results...invest high pick value in the position...

I am fine with him at Mike. But our personnel options will determine where he plays, and he realizes that. If we land TJ Watt in the 2nd round, then Kiko is playing the Mike, at least for one more year. If we land Jarrad Davis, then Kiko is playing Will. Regardless, our scheme will ask slightly different things once we finally have competent players at LB. If/When (and I pray it's when) we finally get 2 or 3 good coverage LB's on the field at once we'll see less of a need for Kiko to play deep pursuit to cover for all of the blown coverages of his teammates. That means his own positioning will be further upfield where he can make more of an impact. When our outside backers can stuff the run it frees up Kiko to shoot the gaps more often and rely on the rest of the defense to handle their gaps. When he has solid play in coverage around him, we should see more blitzes from Kiko, regardless of which position he plays.

Right now, we're not able to see the best use of Kiko, because he needs to be a bit of a pursuit safety net for the rest of our putrid LB corps. But, once we get competent players in there, IMHO, we'll see more of what we saw from him in his rookie year in Buffalo. I'm perfectly fine with that at Mike.

If this front office had a clue they would put another quality DT next to Suh and fix a lot of issues. Just go back and look at Kiko in 2013 when he played behind Dareus and Williams at DT.

Alonso may not be a legend—yet—however, he certainly has the edge on becoming 2013's defensive rookie of the year. When comparing just his numbers to other potential candidates, Alonso is the clear-cut top performer.

Alonso not only leads in two categories, but he is the only rookie who is in the top five in all three major defensive measurements.

Statistics aside, Alonso also brings a certain tenacity to the Bills defense that makes the entire unit better. He brings the kind of presence that we've seen from players like Troy Polamalu and Patrick Willis. Simply put, he must always be accounted for.

2013: 159 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 ints, 5 PD, 1 FF, 2 FR

2nd year in the same system and another year removed from the knee injury. Sign me up.
