Kiko's blog... He belongs to Miami

I like Kiko. He's not a great player, you won't see his shrine in Canton, but he's a damn solid linebacker with football smarts, toughness, leadership ability and a penchant for making the big play in a big spot that swings the game in our favor. We need guys like Kiko and I'm glad to have him.
If Mcmillan becomes the player that I think he can, then Kiko and Reakwon will be a very good nickel LB duo for the next 5 years or so for us.
 
I am a big fan of Kiko. Kiko has always been a high motor/high effort type and I think Kiko has every opportunity to become above good here in Miami now that he has more than scrubs around him.
 
It's great to see individual players really wanting to play for Miami. This can be a very contagious sentiment and having players play with their hearts and souls will give them the edge they have lacked for so many years. The mental cohesiveness of the team will help through adversities sure to come in a few months.
 
The NFL is a business of winning, not one of loyalty. Fans love handing Alonso the participation trophy for effort, but he's nothing more than an average LB. He has plenty of time to enjoy South Florida when he retires from football and he can address his sentiments for the area then. Meanwhile, we handed out a very poor contract extension in return for more YAK. Yeah.

So you're a tad unsettled on Kiko?
 
Moving Kiko to the outside weakside hopefully will enhance what talents Kiko brings to the table and more importantly keep him healthy. I did not mind extending his contract this year for performance as much as concerns for his health. Kikos and Branchs contracts were definitely on the heavy side but we had squat for talent at those positions so I can live it this year but moving forward we have to do better.

Moving him to Will in an Under front would make the best use of what he has, but unless we constantly rotate to our Sam & Will to counter every single motion that an offense uses to change the line or backfield strength, the outside backer positions in our defense are essentially the same.

Get set to be proven wrong, SOS. With the additions of Lawrence Timmons and Raekwon McMillan, Kiko now has some much better linebacker teammates who are good tacklers to join him. A healthy and happy Kiko Alonso is actually good news for the Miami Dolphins - not bad news.
OK, we get it SOS - you have repeatedly come here on FH and professed your dislike of Kiko Alonso, but there is a reason why Miami paid up to get him to re-sign as a Dolphin. Adam Gase, Mike Tannenbaum, Chris Grier, Matt Burke and our other professional NFL player evaluators actually disagree with you - they like his instincts and believe he can contribute to the team.
BTW - Kiko's ties to the Latin community and complete fluency in Spanish (English is his second language) are also good news for the Dolphins. It's actually good to have a prominent player of Cuban heritage who can help to excite and expand the fan-base in South Florida. You may not be aware but post games, Latino commentators rush to Kiko (El Bravo 47) for Q & A sessions in Spanish.

I'm sure having JAGS in front of him didn't affect his play. :confused: Ask Zach Thomas how important it was to have TWO good DT's in front of him. Now we have this *&^& scheme with no 2 gap DT....

Kiko may not have had a spectacular year but people seem to forget that he turned his career trajectory around in one year here. THREE years (and one major injury year), 3 different schemes, 32 starts, 7 int's & 6 FR's. By way of comparison, Channing Crowder had 1 int & 3 FR in 6 years.

Year 2 in the same system with better talent around him will translate to an excellent year. A move to WLB, even better because it suits his skill set better.

Nothing can be said about anyone on this site with out hate coming out. Kiko isn't Zach Thomas, but he had a way above average season with zero help from the other LBs. 115 tackles, 4 fumble recoveries, 2int, 1 game winning td, and he played with a cast on his hand at the end of the year. I'm very excited for his 2nd year in this defense with quality LBs lining up with him, and hopefully more help from the DEs with setting the edge.

Fans are not IN the NFL business and a fan without loyalty....well....you get the picture. I'm glad to see a team built around character and rewarded for hard work. Whether or not it pays off in "W's" is another story but I like the blue-collar mentality being cultivated by Adam Gase. A culture in Miami? Go figure.

I couldn't read the article but how anyone can have disdain for someone successfully assimilating in the community is beyond me.
