Coach gets multiyear deal after getting team into playoff contention

Isiah Thomas delivered “evident progress†sooner than needed.

Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan planned to wait all season before deciding on Thomas’ future with the Knicks. But when New York fought through a few recent injuries to move into playoff position, Dolan concluded he no longer needed to wait.

So have gave Thomas a multiyear contract extension Monday, nine months after he warned the Knicks coach and team president that the team needed to show improvement this season or he’d be out of a job.

“My thinking was that it was going to go the whole season,†Dolan said. “But in the last few weeks I’ve just become absolutely convinced and I think they’ve shown, they’ve done what we asked them to do. And I felt that now is the time to do it.â€Â

The announcement comes with the Knicks having climbed into eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Dolan said he reached his decision sometime in the last 10 days, and Thomas said he was told about it Sunday night. Neither he nor Dolan provided any contract details, other than that Thomas would keep both jobs.

“I feel good that the uncertainty about my professional situation is cleared up,†Thomas said after practice. “But again, the most important thing is that we keep our team moving forward and we stay focused and continue to tr to get into the playoffs.â€Â

Well...you know what that means.

If your team has an overpaid guard that chucks up a ton of shots and turns it over like crazy....

he is not safe.

ISIAH WANTS HIM!

exactly. i feel a channing frye/wally sczerbiak swap this offseason :boohoo:

my only hope is cablevision owner james dolan comes to his senses and closes the checkbook during FA (see: james, jerome - 5yr/30m and jefferies, jared - 5yr/30 for reasons why) and doesnt allow any more payroll to be added via trades. Im not betting on that happening either.

I hate that i love the Knicks. I miss Ewing Oakley Mason and Derek Harper. :bighug:

they had to extend him. He is probably taking them to the playoffs and where they were last year that is a minor miracle.

Eddie Curry saved Isiah's assssssssss!!

Good he deserves it. He was a good coach with the Pacers. Obviously, He's a below averge evauator though.
Hope he's here for some time.

This is a joke. Playoffs or no playoffs this year, this is a joke. Isiah has run this organization into the ground and getting this team to 5 games under .500 does not warrant an extension, especially with all the talent the Knicks have accumulated. If we were 5 games over and securely in the playoffs I would have done it but even then I would have waited until the season is over. Eddie Curry might have saved Isiah's job but the guy still can't rebound for ****!

:roflmao: Knicks are the Einsteins of the Basketball World.....

NOT....more like the Jessica Simpsons

 Oh **** they're serious? In that case:sidelol: :sidelol: :sidelol: :sidelol: :sidelol:

Is Isiah really that bad? Granted he hasn't made extremely good executive decisions since he got to New York, in fact they've been border line terrible, but he's a players coach, maybe a push over, but he's like able and guys play for him, which is why they are going to the playoffs unlike last year with Brown. Yeah he's blown a lot of money too, but the Knicks payroll wasn't exactly full of well spent cash when he got there either. He's not a great coach, but he's a good enough coach, better than anything out there. As a team executive however, he needs to step down from that.

I totally agree Curry saved him. That deal doesn't look as bad as I previous thought, especially since the Bulls didn't do anything to help get another big guy in, even with all the assets they have. Curry would look pretty good down low for the Bulls right now, he would have been the perfect piece. Given what Isiah had to work with, he has done a pretty good job if he sneaks in the playoffs. Remember people the Knicks were in shambles long before Isiah arrived.
