Hall Of Famer
Since Marino was kicked out of Miami we have not had one good Qb. Frerotte did have the one decent year and Fielder had a couple of decent years. The biggest reason for our current and previous messes at Qb was refusal to draft a Qb to develop along with not giving any of our qb's with the exception of Fielder a chance to develop.
I will go over our qb's aquired and draft picks
I will start with the year that Jimmy Johnson took over because it had to be apparent there was a need for a Qb of the future at that time.
1996
Brought in Craig Erickson who was 27 at the time. Solid Move. Started three games that season and had been a decent starter for Tampa Bay. Injuries forced him out of here early but was a decent backup type. Never was really the same after surgery. Ignored qB in draft
1997
Signed Damon Huard undrafted Qb from previous year
Was 25 at that time Not considered a great prospect
Ignored qb in draft
1998
Drafted John Dutton in 6th round solid late round prospect, did not make team. Has been in arena league since 2000. Damon Hurad is now the backup and has thrown 9 passes. Huard played well in NFL Europe.
1999
Again made no attempt to draft a Qb passed over Shaun King and Brock Huard(whom I thought was a great prospect with a 1st round grade but injuries). Also passed on Aaron Brooks. Damon Huard was now the backup
althugh still was not envisioned as a future starter by most. Did trade a 7th for Jim Drukinmiller a low budget move I liked. Signed 32 year old Scott Zolak as a free agent. Cut Drukimiller former first round pick, did not seem to me they gave him any chance to make team but he never did anything afterwards. Huard started 5 games for an injured Marino and feeled in quite unexpectedly well. Went 5 -1 in games in played the majority of. Looked slightly awkward at times but had a 79.8 Qb rating with 8 tds 4 int with a completion percentage of 57 percent. Solidfied himself as heir apparent in most eyes.
2000
Tommorrow comes quicker than we think. Jimmy Johnson quits on us and is somehow able to choose the next coach. They choose Dave Wanndstadt Im not excited but have no real problem with the hire of an experienced coordinator. We the basically tell Marino to go screw himself and sign a 29 year old who has started one game in his career to be our starter. Huard was given first chance to be our starter in preseason but struggled to score and Fielder although not that great in preaseason was named starter over the incumbant Huard. Was not pleased with the decision at all. I thought they panicked too much based on preseason. I thought based on how he played last year that Huard deserved the job. So Wanny basically brought in a guy and gave Huard very little chance to be the starter. Was thoroughly confused how we did not go after a more established player Huard did finally play later in year and started one game when Fielder was injured. Had a bad game relieving the injured Fielder which was slightly understandable with not playing all year 3 int. Had a solid game in his one start in a win versus Indy.
22 of 33 for 183 yards with a TD. For the year Fielder had 14 tds 14 Ints and a 74.5 rating solid but unspectacular. Fielder does show good leadership but has very limited arm. We passed on Tom Brady and Marc Bulger in this draft along with every other Qb.
2001
Trade low picks for Cade McNown former number 1 pick, another low risk move which I liked. We basically let Damon Huard go and sign Ray lucas as our backup. A puzzling switch in my mind since Huard had done well for us.
In the draft we pass on a franchise type QB for a nickelback, we do draft a Qb in the 6th round though the mighty Josh Heupal. We had negotiations for Matt Hasselback but never offered enough so we stuck with what we had.
Fielder played pretty good although his td to int ratio was mediocre. Had a passer rating of 80 which is great compared to where we have been lately.
20 tds and 19 int. CAde Mc Nown was basically never used and was only 24.
Passing On Drew Brees was a real killer supposedly because he did not bring anything better to the table than Fielder(Yea pretty dumb). Were alot of Qb pospects in the draft that we passed on including Rosenfels, Feeley and weinke. So once again no Qb to develop.
2002
We again draft no damn Qb, passing on David Garrard. We trade McNown for a sixth and the last week of preseason for Sage Rosenfels. we trade a 7th.
Fielder has his best season but can only start 10 games. 14 tds 9 int and a 85 rating. Lucas was not very good in relief with a 69 rating 4tds 6 int so we paid for letting Huard walk and not doing better to have a quality backup.
Was happy we aquired Rosenfels thought he was a good developmental QB that could be decent starter in this league. Lucas was the mediocre Qb I thought he was but we continued trend of aquiring Qb's that have one good game against us.
2003
Once again passed on Qb in the draft, Chris Simms fell right into our laps but we pass again. We sign Brian Griese who is a little banged up and dont ever really let him compete for the starting Qb job. Former pro bowler. Fielder got hurt and Griese got to play. Was very good in his first two games but struggled in his next 3 games. Won 3 games out of 5 and the offensive line was getting him killed much like Fielder. Griese ended up with a 69 rating 5 tds and 6 int. Fielder ended the year with 11 tds and 13 int 72 rating. Neither Qb was impressive but they signed Griese to a contract that jumps too far in the second year. Could have also drafted Tony Romo.
2004
Shocked me when they gave away a second rounder for AJ Feeley. The trade made no sense on any level to me.Still drafted no QB. Cut Griese after one season. Dumbest trade ever, I know some will bring up Daunte but Daunte had been a three time pro bowler, no other team would have made this trade. What was even more stupid about this trade is they traded away a second round pick and still did not have a legit Qb competition. Was also dissapointed that Rosenfels was not given a shot. Both Qb's were bad in preseason but Wanny stuck with his Fielder again. Feeley was given a quick shot when Fielder struggled weak one. Feeley looked solid week one. After that he was pretty bad. With the exception of the one St Louis game Fielder looked pretty bad and ended up with his worst season as a Phin completing 53 percent of his passes 7tds and 8 int with a passing rating of 67.1. Feeley ended up with53 percent 11 tds and 15 int. with a rating of 61.7. Feeley was 3-5 as a starter on a very injured team. He did show some improvement in the final weeks of the year and felt slightly better about the trade and he really hung in there banged up. Ended a very bad year thinking we have some Qb's to develop and need to draft a young guy. Fielder looked pretty damn done. Rosenfels finally got to start a game but against a tuff Raven defense
he did not look good but it was his first start and had been third string most of the time here.
2005
Signed Gus Frerotte as a free agent and sent Fielder packing. I would have been alright with Saban bringing in Frerotte if he had a plan to draft a damn Qb but of course we dont draft no stinking Qb's. Linhan seems to be leaning towards his former player from the beginning. Frerotte is named starter and Feeley is sent shopping one year after trading a second round pick for him. Even more insulting is that we had to add a sixth round pick to get another third stringer Cleo Lemon. Just not sure what we would have lost by trying to see what Feeley might could do with a little more time. The one positive was that Rosenfels was finally the backup although he still was pretty ignored and should have been given more of a chance the previous year. Frerotte had a pretty decent year but a real poor completion percentage really sunk us.Frerotte completed 54.2 percent with 18 tds and 13 int. Had a rating of about 74. Rosenfels only got one start against Cleveland and had a bad outing but should have been given another chance. Played great versus Buffalo in a comeback win passing for almost 300 yards in a half and netting Chambers his best game as a pro. After this great game you would think what the hell lets see if he has finally come around some. Sat him back on bench the following week. Then had him come in relief versus Jets and he had a solid performance only to go back to the bench for the rest of the year. Had a passer rating of 81 with 55 percent completions 4tds and 3 int.
I truly think at worst Rosenfels was a good backup and was worth keeping the next year.
2006
Before draft we trade a second round pick for Culepper and cut Frerotte due to another contract that jumps too much in second year. WE dont even try to resign Rosenfels and he signs with Texans. We later trade a fifth round pick for Harrington. We missed out on Brees in free agency and the consolation prize was Culpepper. Many thought he would miss half of the season and we got Harrington so we would be ready for that. Thought that this was not a bad idea but still needed to draft a guy like Croyle or a project. Knew that Lemon was not our future at Qb in a good way. We skipped Qb again in the draft. Culpepper was way ahead of schedule it seemed. He did not look too peachy in preseason, offense seemed no better at that time.Culpepper did have good Qb rating in preseason but no tds. Culpepper starts first 4 games quite a few new faces on line and gets slaughtered due to lack of mobility and poor line play. Ends up 1-3 , opened with a poor game on road versus Pitt progressively was getting slightly better and has his best game just before he was benched in favor of Harrington due to issues with mobility from injury. He had a 78 Qb rating 2 tds 3 int and a comp pct of sixty percent. Harrington fared no better although he had a nice 4 game winstreak with a 400 yard game versus Green Bay. Line did play better with some changes on line, most notably Shelton moving to guard and McIntosh to LT. Harrington ended up at 68 rating with 57 % completion and 12 tds and 15 int. Lemon played good in relief in Jets game and started final game versus Indy and did respectable. Final stats 55 percent completion 77 rating and 2 tds 1int.
2007
Once again we change coaches and we cut Harrington. We pass on Quinn for Ginn but do something weird in the second round, they take a Qb prospect although Im not a fan if his age no matter what any say. Wanted Quinn or Edwards all the way. They then aquire Green in another of our endless trades
that never make any sense. We then go through the whole mishandled Daunte saga. Im irked we trade a pick on a guy who is in regression and concussion risk.Lemon is now the main backup. Green has a fake competition with Lemon. How can you have a competition and give Lemon no starts in preseason. Cam was full of it from beginning. Lemon actually outplayed Green in preseason but of course he knew it was all a sham. Green started the first 5 games of the year and suprise got a concussion. He did had a good game versus Jets and played solid versus Washington but overall you could see he was far from the Green of old. He was dreadful versus Dallas and Oakland.
60 % completion, 5tds and 7 int with a 72 rating and 0-4 as our starter.
Lemon took over and over a 4 game stretch, was basically the same as Green. I could understand palying Lemon until the bye week but Cam totally flubs it and lets it go on one more week before he trys out his new Qb. Beck then started the next three games and looked pretty lost like most rookies thrown into the fire. After a some of the most horrid looking three series including a fall down, 3 sacks and a fumble for a touchdown, Beck is replaced
and Lemon is brought back. There was only one NFL Qb on the field that day and it was Edwards who had a nice game with few mistakes. I personally think it was a big mistake to not start Beck right after the bye week. As for benching him, I think he should have let him play a little longer to see if he could work it out. Beck did play better versus Cinncy although thier defense does suck. Lemon had the best game of his career versus Balt in our only win. Lemon for the year was a respectable 6 td 6 int 71 rating with 56 percent accuracy. Beck had 1 TD and 3 int with a 62 rating and 56 percent.
We have already cut last year's starter as well as not resigning Lemon so at this point we have one QB so just more traffic through the revolving Qb door.
The only positive out of all this is that we finally have started drafting Qb's but still have mishandled this position as bad as any team in the league if not worst .
Too often we replaced drafting a qb to develop with trading for someone elses darft pick ... Feeley, Rosenfels, Druckimiller, Mc Nown
Aquire a banged up vet .... Culpepper, Griese, Green
Have never seemed to have a true competition for Qb.
I would definately like to have a true compition this year with Beck involved, if he was as NFL ready as people thought he can start this year if he can out play another guy.
We changed Qb plans either way too soon usually or way too late with Fielder.
We did not give some players fair shots especially based on investment as in Culpepper's and Feeley's case. Lucky we were so good we could just give away picks(I will do a post on our wasted draft picks soon) Also had a solid developing Rosenfels and just let him go when he would have been fairly cheap to keep.
Definately no team has been as clueless as us at the Qb position,
Hopefully we will try to develop Beck and draft another guy to develop just in case we miss with Beck. Please for the love of God let Green retire or go elsewhere. and lets not wait another 15 years to draft a QB.
One thing also for the people that complain about trading for Anderson of which Im not a big fan of it includes the top pick. People on this board were saying that its a bad idea but this trade would be quite differant than any of our recent trades.
The trades for Feeley, culpepper and Green all where for players that had done nothing in well over a year. Its also differant than trading for disspointing high draft picks that got a chance to play like McNown and Harrington. If a top pick has a top player holding him back like Quinn in Cleveland, Rivers in SD a few years ago or even Rogers in GB.
I just hope we can get some type of vision going but our coaches and managers are to blame for this mess.
It just looks bad when our old backup looks better than anybody on our roster.
I will go over our qb's aquired and draft picks
