Laconfara: Starks close to returning to fins

Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley 17s

Should Starks sign, I'd imagine his deal be closer to the one the Dolphins offered Soliai, not the Falcons.

Consider me damaged by JLC in the past and almost think it is too good to be true that the best DT in FA might return to the team.

JLC hit list
* Sean Smith will be tagged
* Jake Long is returning
* Jared Cook is close to signing
* The Fins are going to get Bountygate-like penalties
* Joe ordered a Code Red on Martin

Anyone else want to add some to the list?

We get it. You don't trust the source. Move on already.

Please please please come back Randy. Not ecstatic about Mitchell. I mean we shouldn't get too excited though, look who this news is coming from

Has he signed? BTW, there is a little JLC in Beasley.

However, I do give you credit. You are the first to defend JLC on this site. Congrats.

lol how did you get his post as defending JLC?

My suspicion is that the Dolphins were willing to keep one of them at the parameters that have been published for Soliai -- 2 years, $11.5 million, no guarantee for 2015. Soliai's agent found him a much better deal on the market, Starks' agent didn't.

Honestly,

If Hickey pulls this off, gets a starter caliber RT or Guard, add another Vet CB (possibly bring Patterson back for half contract) and maybe toss in a veteran RB on a one year prove it deal.

I will cream myself.

Miami offered Soliai a two-year deal worth $11.5 million, with half of that guaranteed.

The Dolphins are shopping Mike Wallace and Dion Jordan.

So we have a GM named Hickey and our DT's might be Earl and Randy.

So who is Crabman?

Great news to have him back. Did not want to lose him.

I think they both wanted to stay, but with the switch away from the 3-4, and Coyle's scheme needing interior pass rushers, Soliai's value for us went way down

I don't know the first thing about evaluating the play of interior linemen but PFF did a piece on players ROI (return on investment) for each team (and PFF evaluations probably should also be taken with a grain of salt) but Soliai was our worst investment for the performance we got.

Overvalued

1. Paul Soliai, Defensive Tackle

This is an interesting case of a player’s value being hurt by his teammates. Paul Soliai by no means had a bad season, as he had a PFF overall grade of +11.1 largely due to his strong run stopping. The problem was both Randy Starks and Jared Odrick were better interior pass rushers, and Starks was also better against the run. This meant that even though he was the second highest paid player on the team, he played in less than half of the Dolphins defensive snaps. It’s hard to have a high value with that few snaps without excellent play.

2013 Cap Hit: $7.4m
2013 Jahnke Value Model: $3.1m
Value Differential: -$4.3m
