Every newcomer to the Miami Dolphins is aware, to one degree or another, of Cameron Wake and his journey to NFL stardom.

For Cleyon Laing, it’s an especially inspirational story. See, Laing is in the beginning stages of attempting to do what Wake did after he signed with the Dolphins in January of 2009.

Like Wake, Laing is a defensive end who came from the Canadian Football League, in his case specifically from the Toronto Argonauts.

“Cam’s made a great career down here coming from the CFL,” Laing said. “He’s a great role model, good guy, good team leader and an excellent player, so yeah, he’s a model person to follow for sure.”

Laing didn’t come to the NFL with the same kind of eye-opening CFL credentials produced by Wake, a two-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player north of the border, but he still had enough potential to draw considerable interest from teams around the league.

Laing, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, went undrafted in 2013 after playing at Iowa State, where he started 11 games as a senior and led the team with three sacks. In three seasons with Toronto, he produced 15 sacks in 35 games.

He’s hoping to land a spot on the roster, where one of the players he would back up is none other than Wake.

Our edge rushers could be a position of strength surprisingly if this kid pans out and Dion comes back strong.

Not to be a downer but I do not expect much from this guy. I do not see the hunger or eye popping numbers Wake had. I imagine he won't even make the final roster. Let us hope I am wrong and he is the next Cam Wake or even half of what Wake is but 15 sacks in 35 games against low level competition does not seem impressive at all to me.

Pulling for the guy to make it, it is a great story, unfortunately 15 sacks in 35 games is not exactly even close to as eye popping as the amount of sacks Wake had before moving on to Miami (I believe over 40 sacks in around the same time frame).

Hopefully he can be a sponge, and absorb as much info and knowledge as he can from Wake.

The DE group can be sneaky good this year . . . I am honestly more concerned with the DT play next to Suh over the play I am getting from our DE's.

It would be a great story if he found NFL success (even a fraction of it) like Wake has. But I agree with you. I just don't see it happening.

You clearly have two sets of homer glasses on...stop drinking the kook-aid. This guy probably doesn't make the team and Dion sucked when he was here...

No, our edge rushers are not a position of strength right now. They are a clear weakness. Take of the glasses and look at things realistically...

Well, I've watched both play in the CFL and he's definitely no Wake but no one ever was. Wake's dominance was unreal. Double teamed every play and still double the sacks of the next closest guy. The interest in Laing is interesting. Definitely a good, rising player who really 'arrived' last year after two under the radar seasons. Still, his 9 sacks is not even top 10 in the league. We shall see.

He may be better than you think. Apparently there were 4 or 5 NFL teams eager to sign him, including the Patriots. The Dolphins personnel guys called in Cam Wake at the finish to help close the deal. We clearly wanted him, otherwise they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of getting Wake involved. He's obviously not in Cam's league re talent but he will be pressing hard for a roster spot. Welcome Cleyon Laing.

Wake and Williams (assuming wake comes back at let's say 80%)

Is NOT a weakness and it's not anyone drinking the cool-aid. It's realizing those are two very capable experienced players who have been to many many probowls.

If those guys are an area of weakness , then 90% of the league has SERIOUS issues at DE

He certainly has the same body type as wake, this guys even bigger of a physical freak. Look at those abs they are bulging out, wait those arent abs? Lol he certainly doesnt look like a d end, looks more like a dt than a 4-3 defensive end.

I am hoping the analysis is that he brings a different skill set than Cam. Maybe this kid can hang in there well against the run. He may not be a sack guy but could bring a stoutness to the line. If he's just a pass rusher, then the data is not all that impressive.

Same body type as Wake? Laing is listed at 6'4 290. At that size, he is more of a compliment to Wake than a comparison. Base DE who kicks inside on passing downs. I haven't seen him play yet but hopefully he can set the edge in the run game. The odds are stacked against him making the team.

That being said, I can't wait to get a look at Wake in the "wide 9". It's an alignment that was made for him and should help all the DE's set the edge better.

It's kind of odd to have the twitchy guy (Wake 6'2 258) on the strong side and the oversized guy (Williams 6'6 295) on the weak side. Theoretically, it would work better the other way around and it puts MW back in the spot he played in Buffalo.... but Wake has had most of his success on the strong side so...

A new scheme like this could be better for a few of our edge guys...Andre Branch, McCain and possibly Jordan if he ends up at DE.
