Every newcomer to the Miami Dolphins is aware, to one degree or another, of Cameron Wake and his journey to NFL stardom.
For Cleyon Laing, it’s an especially inspirational story. See, Laing is in the beginning stages of attempting to do what Wake did after he signed with the Dolphins in January of 2009.
Like Wake, Laing is a defensive end who came from the Canadian Football League, in his case specifically from the Toronto Argonauts.
“Cam’s made a great career down here coming from the CFL,” Laing said. “He’s a great role model, good guy, good team leader and an excellent player, so yeah, he’s a model person to follow for sure.”
Laing didn’t come to the NFL with the same kind of eye-opening CFL credentials produced by Wake, a two-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player north of the border, but he still had enough potential to draw considerable interest from teams around the league.
Laing, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, went undrafted in 2013 after playing at Iowa State, where he started 11 games as a senior and led the team with three sacks. In three seasons with Toronto, he produced 15 sacks in 35 games.
He’s hoping to land a spot on the roster, where one of the players he would back up is none other than Wake.
