I just saw this article as I was scouring through ESPN.com
It's an insider article, so for those who aren't subscribed, I'll add the quote.

The Miami Dolphins may have gotten a steal on the third day of the draft this year, picking up RB Lamar Miller in Round 4. And judging by some of the comments emanating from the club in recent days, we may not have to wait too long to see the U. of Miami product make an impact at the NFL level. And it won't just be about taking handoffs and trying to find some space in the midst of all the earth-movers up front
"There's a chance down the road, as Lamar gets acclimated, that he might be able to spread himself a ways as a receiver to a certain degree," Dolphins HC Joe Philbin quipped, according to the Palm Beach Post. "I'm not saying make a full position change, but I think there's some flexibility with what you can do with the guy."
The Dolphins have the archetype for such a player already on the roster in Reggie Bush, who is able to contribute as an RB, WR and in the return game. Whether Miller has an extensive role as a rookie will be influenced by Bush's productivity, as well as that of the WRs on the roster.

I'm really excited to see how they utilize him. Add him to compliment an already speedy weapon in Bush, and you get an exciting 1-2 combo.
You have to love that we got a talent like him in the 4th round.

I'd like to see both Miller and Bush on the field at the same time in certain spots. One of them as a WR (Bush is probably the best WR on the team and has a season of around 90 receptions under his belt), with the other lined up as a RB

Miller is actually a very good pass catcher but just wasn't use enough in that role in UM's offense .. Those two on the field at the same time with one of Clay or Egnew and their physical abilities as seam threats drawing safeties (something Fasano could not do to save his life as defenses never focused on him as he's slower than a turtle), will open up the offense

I can't wait til that piece of crap meatball Fasano is gone from the team after the season . You're finally going to see some real TE's in Miami that can threaten and manipulate defenses, benefiting the entire offense no matter what numbers the individual TE may have

First off, I agree with you about Bush. The guy is a damn good receiving RB.

Bush was drafted 2nd overall in the '06 draft.
The first WR off the board that year was Santonio Holmes to the Steelers w/ the 25th pick overall.
I know different positions, different routes, etc, etc. But I find this very interesting....

Bush has 337 career receptions @ a total of 2,438 yds (7.2 avg)
Santonio has 338 career receptions @ a total of 5,235 yds (15.5 avg)

I know the total yards is a big difference. But to have the same amount of receptions as a legit WR. Just goes to show how Bush is multi-dimensional and can be utilized in many ways.

Sprinkle in Bush's 3,176 career rushing yards (plus 2,438 receiving yards & 772 return yards) and you're looking at 6,000 + all purpose yds.

Now as for the Fasano bashing, you're either blind, insane, or a Notre Dame hater.... he may not be as fast as Jimmy Graham or Vernon Davis. But the guy is one helluva blocking TE and one of the better 'well rounded' TE's.

Only the Giants Jake Ballard (15.9), Titans Jared Cook (15.5), Pats Rob Gronkowski (14.7), were the only starters that had a better Average Yards Per Catch in the NFL for TE's. Fasano averaged 14.1.

Fasano's 5 touchdowns last year was 1 less than Jimmy Graham (6) and Vernon Davis (6)
Anythony matched the touchdown total for other TE's like Dustin Keller, Gregg Olsen, Brandon Pettigrew & Jason Witten.

Fasano only had 32 receptions, but 12 of those went for 20+ yards (which is good enough to be 9th in the NFL for TE's in 2011)
25 of his 32 receptions were for 1st downs. So you know he moves the chains.
Fasano was the 3rd best TE for 1st down %, converting 78.1% of his receptions for 1st downs. Only behind Jake Ballard and Jermichael Finley.

He may not be the fastest, but he has been one of our most consistent recieving threats for the past couple seasons, not to mention he is a GREAT blocking TE. Unlike our newly drafted TE who couldn't block my 3 year old cousin Sally. (Not to mention to be a TE in the NFL blocking is sort of a prerequisite.)

Plus I hear many people talk about Fasano and fumbles.... His first season was '06.
'06 = 0 fumbles
'07 = 0 fumbles
'08 = 0 fumbles
'09 = 2 fumbles
'10 = 0 fumbles
'11 = 0 fumbles

Unless he does Philbins daughter, he probably will still be a dolphin next season.

Tell that to Aaron Hernandez.

Touche.
But it doesn't hurt having the speed of Hernandez, the compliment of Gronkowski to draw all focus onto him, and not to mention Tom Brady who is pass happy. Wes Welker also helps to distract the defense. Put him on any other team and he'll have trouble playing every down if he can't block.

Not to mention, how many scouts have trashed Mizzou TE's?? Because historically they haven't produced in the NFL.
1 scout,
“They don’t teach them how to block there and then he shows up at the Senior Bowl and has no idea,”
2 scout,
“In that offense they don’t ask him to run routes. It’s all straight-line, find the space and get open. Or throw it up and you can jump and go make a catch. Real good kid. You’re betting on the come.”

I am hopeful that he can be like an Aaron Hernandez for us, that would be great. A viable seam threat that helps the outside WR's get open and draws attention.

Until Egnew can develop some blocking skills, I think he will only appear in the red zone and on the occasional passing play. I just don't see how he has any value on non-passing plays unless he's being used as a distraction.

But I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to have a blazing TE who the opposing Defense struggles with.

THIS is Miller's role. I don't care how he gets the ball either rushing , recieving , or kick returns. It's all good.

Agreed. As natural runner as I have seen in some time. Give him the ball. Let him run.

Fasano is a great 2nd TE who s/b the well rounded one. I bet Miami carries at least 3 TE's this year. Egnew (receiving TE), Fasano, & Yeatman (the blocking TE)... Mastrud will be waived. At this point, I don't know if Brown will be #4 or Practice squad.

Clay makes it as a TE. Brown won't make the team. Yeatman won't make the team.

I hope and think he can be a real playmaker for us. Never can have too many dynamic types in the backfield.

I wouldnt be mad if we just used him as a kick returner for the first few years of his career. we haven't had a gamebreaker back there for as long as i can remember. we'll be good with all of the veteran RB's ahead of him for the near future.

i think in 2012 his primary role is Reggie Bush insurance. Game plan with Bush, Miller steps up if Bush can't go. Bush walks in 2013, and Miami gets a 3rd or 4th round comp pick assuming Ireland plays FA right.

Amazing how a thread about Lamar Miller turns into a Fasano bash fest. Way to stay on topic Finheaven.
