Larry Csonka: The Original Beast Mode

Man, what I would give to have watched him play. My dad and grandfather still talk about him. I have his jersey and it's my favorite one to wear. Thanks for sharing

That was terrific. Thanks for posting OP :thumbsup

I remember when he got a flag for being too physical with a tackler trying to knock him out of bounds..he definitely was a beast. Favorite player back in the day.

Shula was supposedly going off, happy that the flag was against the defense, then totally went balistic went they called it against Csonka! Zonk was definitely my favorite as a little kid growing up. Never been another like him!

that was awesome, Csonka was my first favorite Dolphins player, i rock his Jersey quite often, and will wear it proudly to a few home games this season. Go Dolphins.

He was first ball carrier to ever be called for unnecessary roughness. As you can see, he is still my favorite Dolphin

One of the best football names ever as well. Csonka wasn't huge by today's standards, but back then a 240 pound running back weighed about the same as defensive lineman. He was an absolute load to take down and an ultimate team first guy. That was pretty prevalent for the Dolphins players back then.

Also if I got a chance to talk football with a former Dolphin, Csonka would be up there on my list. He's a great story teller with an obvious passion for the game.

Thanks for sharing.

He apparently was also quite the prankster and the one player who could get away w pushing Shula's buttons and not being punished too bad or at all for it. My favorite story is either where he and Manny Fernandez caught a gator and put it in Shula's shower or when he and not sure who else spliced porn into the front of the game film they'd be watching in the morning game tape review. They said Shula didn't know what else to do but laugh. Zone was larger than life.

Awesome. And you know the most impressive part? Those aren't even clips that deserve to make his highlight reel at all.

Here is Csonka. You see almost the entire defense crushing into the interior OL, where a pile of Dolphins OL are squeezed together like they're in a vice grip. Then this huge fullback, Csonka gets the handoff and somehow disappears into the pile ... you count one-one thousand ... two-one thousand ... and all of a sudden, the pile starts moving forward ... and inexplicably, moves past the 1st down marker before it stops. You don't even see Csonka! He just seems to put the entire pile on his shoulders and carries both teams or something!

The dude wasn't fast or at all elusive. But he was the very definition of an irresistible force. It wasn't the big runs that were impressive, it was getting those 3rd and 1's when everyone in the stadium knew who was getting the ball and where he was running. It's having 3rd and goal from the 2 and knowing we were going to score. THAT was why Csonka was so dominant. THAT is why he was the best fullback that ever played in the NFL.

Yeah, I hear about Jim Brown ... but in this video they even mention that he broke Jim Brown's records at Syracuse. Brown had far more speed and elusiveness than Csonka ever had ... but nobody who ever played the game had a stronger lower body or a more punishing style than Csonka. By the time the 4th quarter rolled around ... none of the defenders wanted to tackle him and only groups them even could. Defenses that faced Csonka very often got dominated the next week because they were still very sore from trying to stop Csonka.

As an opposing coach at the time once said, "next to the term Fullback in the dictionary there is a picture of Larry Csonka."

Best. Fullback. Ever.
