From Jason Cole on The Sporting News.com 12/18/05. (The information is free so I posted the paragraph here):

2006 BREAKOUT PLAYER:The Dolphins rookie class is already one of the best in team history with three starters (RB Ronnie Brown, LB Channing Crowder and CB Travis Daniels) and two other contributors (DT Manny Wright and DE Matt Roth). But one of the most interesting players for the team to watch this offseason and going into next season is OT Anthony Alabi. The Dolphins loved Alabi's athletic ability and love how intelligent he is. Alabi has a large frame with long arms and the Dolphins think he has a chance to be a left tackle at some point, perhaps as early as next season. That would be a huge boost because it would keep them from having to spend a high pick on left tackle and would save money (Alabi was a fifth-round pick). Even if Alabi doesn't make it at left tackle, he should be able to push former first-round pick Vernon Carey on the right side.

wow that is cool that alabi could succeed and i hope he tears it up. we havnt really had a franchise o-lineman in fins history have we.

That would be icing on the cake. Question is, would he be just average, above average or dominating? If he's just one of the first two options, would it be worth it to spend a lot more + the draft pick to get a potenitially dominating LT? Two different strategies. Obviously dominating LT's worked/helped Baltimore and St Louis on their SB runs. But Denver and New England just had good-to-very good LT's.

What?

Dwight Stephenson from recent history. (Richmond Webb was dominating in his pass protection only). How about checking out the HoF list of Dolphins Offensive linemen?

That is great news. I thought we would have to spend a 1st or 2nd round draft pick on a LT but if this is true it would mean so much to our future for the team. If Alabi can be our future at LT we will be in a much better position to either trade up and get our franchise QB we have needed for so long or stay put and draft the BPA at any position that would benefit our team the most over the long haul.

I've seen several threads here that say that coach Hauck hand picked Alabi. This speaks volumes IMO. Does anybody know the extent of his injury, or if he can practice and workout again yet.

Hmm...thinking thinking thinking...

Get rid of Stockar McDougle. Buy another RT like Stockar. Get rid of Damion McIntosh (high cap figure). Alabi and Carey compete for the starting LT spot while the new guy takes the RT spot? It would basically be an identical repeat of what we did prior to this season, except hopefully we would choose a veteran better than Stockar McDougle...personally I've proposed Jon Runyan but who knows.

If this is true then it looks like we really know how to pick em when it comes to the 5th round!

Jon Runyan isn't going to be much cheaper than McIntosh. I'm sure his salary can be adjusted just a bit. Besides he's played well and there is something to continuity especially at the tackle spots.

Whitworth?

It depends...I'd show Whitworth practically zero favoritism based on Saban's time there. If Houck takes a shine to the guy then he takes a shine to the guy. If not, not. Last draft OL seemed like the least Saban-oriented position we drafted. It was all Houck's show. Anthony Alabi and Michael Roos were guys that Houck liked, Saban had no experience with them. Meanwhile, they politiely declined on Ben Wilkerson (even though he appeard in just about every Dolfans' mock draft prior to the draft) in every round all the way down to when he was an undrafted free agent.

I don't see Whitworth as being a LIKELY candidate, at least not more than other guys like Colledge, O'Callaghan, Thomas, etc. But, he is a mid to high round tackle, and that could be an area we look to take a tackle...so...

Hopefully Alabi can be the answer at left tackle. If that were to be the case, I would be even more impressed with Saban and Co's ability to evaluate talent. I think these guys will get some steals this year IMO.

We'll see what kind of price tag we get on Runyan. LT is one of those positions where you either need to have your franchise guy or be on the way toward looking for him. A competition between Carey and Alabi would allow for the possibility for Alabi or Carey to ascend a bit...whereas just penciling D-Mac in as the starter doesn't really do much toward the cause of development. Is it a risk? Sure. You have to take risks to get rewards. Is it a HUGE risk? Heck no, Carey and D-Mac were neck and neck through TC for the LT spot, in fact Carey had a firm lead before Stockar sucked so badly that Carey had to move over to RT to clean up his doo-doo.
