Just curious as to how bad our LB situation really is. We've had some bad cores over the years so I'm curious where would our current group rank vs the following:

2008, Porter, Crowder, Ayodele, Roth (inside backers really)
2009, Taylor, Crowder, Ayodele, Porter
2013, Wheeler, Ellerbe, Misi
2014, Wheeler, Misi, Jenkins
2015, Jenkins, Shephard/Vigil, Misi

Where would our current group stack up against the others? Obviously any core that includes Taylor and/or Porter is better just wondering more about the inside backers.

(Sung to the tune of Sinatra's It Was A Very Good Year)

Back in 2013, it was a very bad year
It was a very bad year for our franchise
Because of the LBs
I watched every game with unease
Ireland's roster smelled of 40 year-old cheese
Back in 2013

I'll go with the young LB group

Jenkins...23 years old
McCain...24
Vigil.......24
Hull.......24
Sheppard...27
Paysinger...27
Misi.......28

Letting go of Dansby was a mistake no doubt. Overpaid, yes, but probably the best LB we've had in years

No way to assess this early, but they didn't look very good Sunday. If they'd learn how to tackle they could be competent.

Jenkins and Misi (when healthy) have proven to be good LB's. Filling in the #3 spot is a work in progress. I'm hoping for more progress and less work in finding #3. We will know a lot more in a few weeks.

Does anyone think the play of the DL had any effect on the play of the LB's?

It does but the linebacker talent overall is below average and many thought that the DL would somehow mask this.

If you look at all the 4-3 OLB's in the NFL you will find that Jennings and Misi are good. No way you will prove that wrong.

I agree in the middle with Sheppard/Vigil and that's where the DL comes in. They are below average and, if the DL plays the same, will look worse. OR, the DL plays well and they look average.

i will agree misi is average im speaking of the unit as a whole. jenins has been good overall

The unit as a whole has two good pieces, and needs the DL to cover for the other for now. Remember that we do not use 3 LB's much, around half the snaps. The rest are 2 LB's and adding to the secondary. It is not a huge deal for the DL to do what they are supposed to do for 2 downs.

just how much money and re-tooling could we do in one offseason?

Since Philbin was hired they've had 4 complete offseasons to put together a decent o-line that can execute the type of offensive blocking schemes that Philbin wants, yet the line is still below average. They can work on fixing the LB corps in another 5-8 years after they build an o-line.

It seems there is always an excuse for a weakness or whatever. Ross has been owner for 5 years yet people act like his hands were tied with extending Sparano and Ireland.
Of course a team is going to have a weakness but the over and over saying you can only do so much in one offseason is getting old.
