After reading his column, I think we are missing an important facet of this mess.
He said Brady has the heart of a champion, and he does. Brady KNOWS he's going to get down the field in 43 seconds to score. Gus THINKS he's going to get the tieing score. When Gus doesnt score on a 4 qtr. drive, we all think something more could have been done.

Think about it this way, if Dan was driving, he would have tied that game or if he did'nt we would have known and felt good about the fact that everything that could have done was done.

The reason why is because he had the fire and heart to win. Gus simply does not, he's more like a robot back there. It also helped that Dan could change up the call and run what he felt was the best play.

IMO.....

That is a great point. I still don't feel like we should have been in a position to tie. When you really thinking about it. Had Reggie Howard been playing 110% he maybe would have laid out for that ball making sure that Tim Dwight wasn't able to get his hands on it at all OR he could have just batted the ball completely out of there giving no chance of a completion.

Brady also has talented playmakers on offense around him who make plays when called upon. Our offense is at least 3, and probably more like 5 players away from the level of talent the NE offense has (QB, WR, OL).

I agree with this comment 100%. Of course, this has been true since Marino retired. We have had an absence in this position since then. That's the obvious. I'm not one to question our coaches and drill them for calling bad plays, but I do have some concern as to why our playmaker isn't getting more chances (Ronnie Brown).

I agree with LeBatard, but with a twist. Brady benefits from other teams defenses assuming he's going to do it. Save me the "heart of a champion" garbage.

Basically, New England kicked their way to 3 Super Bowls, yet somehow Brady has been awarded this champion's mystique, which I just don't get.

I think brady benefits more from his mystique than he does his actual ability or his "heart of a champion".

all i know, is that I saw several dropped passes in the endzone and one missed field goal. If the qb gets the ball in the receivers hands, then the receiver has to make the catch.... We should have won that game yesterday, and its not Gus' fault..

Well, I wouldn't have much confidence if my #1 receiver drops every other ball thrown at thim. This shouldn't even be a discussion because Chambers should have caught that ball. Brady knows he's going down the field to score because his players do their jobs as well. Don't forget...Frerote DID march his team down the field and DID put the ball where it needed to be in order to send the game to OT. If you ask me, it's Chambers that's lacking the heart of a champion.

Oh by the way....you can scratch me off the list of people who thought Brady was overrated. I still think he's made to look better by his coaching and receivers but the dude is player.

The O-line has played well.

Please say that you were kidding when you said that NE had more 'talented playmakers' last night than we did on offense ...

Did you really look at who was in uniform last night ...

We were playing their 3d string .... and they still marched down the field against our defense ...

And don't compare GUS and Brady ... that one's a no brainer ... I'm talking about his 'cast' last night ...

Not sure I agree with that...I think I would say they've played "decent", and that Houck has done as good as he could with what he's got to work with. I'm not sure I'd agree with "played well". I still think we need to get nastier on the OL, and I think we need player upgrades at at least 2 spots (Center, Tackle).

Nope, not kidding at all. They have guys that catch the ball, and they have a guy that throws the ball on-time/on-target about 90% of the time. (e.g., "playmakers"). We on the other hand, have receivers that seem to drop about half of the catchable balls thrown their way, and a QB that throws the ball on-time/target about 60% of the time. They also have #1 draft pick Tight Ends that are serious playmakers also. Did you happen to notice Watson drag his foot on his 2nd TD catch? Did you happen to notice that their guys didn't drop passes? Did you happen to notice that Brady threw most of his passes right where they needed to be? Did you happen to notice that their "2nd & 3rd string" o-line was opening gigantic holes thru our defense, so much so that Heath Evans could bust off 20 yard gains? :-) We'll be much better next year, but right now we just don't have enough guys who can execute. Thank WannSpiel for that...

Huock's done this much in only 9 games. There's no indication the line has reached it's full potential. And, there's still 7 games left. But, I agree we need at least a LT upgrade. I'm not contradicting myself here.... I am saying THIS line can get better. But, long term, we need at least a better LT. C, as you said, would be my other "upgrade".

On a different note, why you call the same jump ball play on consecutive downs with the sun INTO THE WR's EYES is simply amazing to me. I realize used Booker the first time and Chambers the second... but it was the same play on the same end zone corner. That was a wasted down. Using Booker as the first jump ball candidate really surprised me. Has he even proven he can win in that situation. CC, albeit not a #1, is better suited for that. I think we tried to set that play up on CC's first TD. But, we went to the opposite corner that time.

Not even one rushing attempt on that goal line stand... playcalling really is killing us. At least we didn't see any end arounds (at least I didn't see any). And, when we took out the garbage plays... the offense looked smoother.

HINT HINT
