In an article dated September 18, 2005...after only two weeks of the NFL season, Mr. Banks had THIS to say:

Snaps
1. Instant analysis is a sign of the times, but I'm always hesitant to take too firm a stand based on limited early-season results. Somehow I don't feel the same compulsion for equivocation in pointing out that Tampa Bay rookie Carnell Williams (drafted No. 5) should never have gone below his fellow Auburn running back Ronnie Brown (No. 2) in last April's draft.

It happens almost every year. Though Williams had been the Tigers' starting tailback and leading rusher, Brown leap-frogged him based on his exceptional workout numbers at the Scouting Combine.

College production versus pro potential. It's an old debate. But after two weeks, with Williams leading the NFL in rushing and proving to be an instant playmaker, and Brown averaging 2.7 yards per carry, score another one for past production.

FLAME ON!!!!

What an idiot. I'd love to see what he has to say now, someone should e-mail him or something.

:rofl3: This guy probably feels like an idiot. I think he was jumping to conclusions a little too soon

Banks, by the way was raised here in St. Petersburg, FL. He got his degree from USF in 1984.

Can anyone say BUCCANEERS HOMER!!!!

He deserves the mute button (for those of you who watch around the Horn). Hes an idiot and its biting him in the you know what now

I disagree with you guys.

He prefaced it by saying he knows he shouldn't make such remarks, but...

So he screwed up on this one - that doesn't make him an idiot. Back off the guy.

Plus, is it any more fair to judge Ronnie vs. Cadillac after 7 games than it was to judge them after 2?

He probably would like to apend his statement, but it would probably be prudent to wait until this season is over, at least, before offering any comparisons. That would only be fair to both players.

He prefaced the statement, and then went on to say BUT he does not feel guilty in making the early call on whether Ronnie or Caddy should have gone first.

Yeah, the guy put himself out there after only 2 weeks and made a call like that, so he has to live with the gobs of flame that should be directed his way for his utter idiocy. Is it more fair to judge the Ronnie/Cadillac thing after 8 weeks as opposed to 2 weeks? Yes, unequivocally yes. Is it very significant to judge them after 8 weeks? It depends on what your judgement is, but no, it's still not very significant.

He negated himself by saying it ANYWAYS. He put himself out there on an island. Now, we'll bomb it!

I understand the media needs to put stories out there for sports fans so I don't take it to heart when reading these columns. My only issue is, where are they when Ronnie has since surpassed what Cadillac has accomplished thus far in their careers? If you're going to hype one guy then be prepared to admit that maybe Nick Saban did make the correct decision when the story's "end" changes.

His compulsions failed him.

Who cares? Both of these guys are just getting started in their careers, after the first two games Cadilac had certainly taken the lead, now after 7 games Ronnie has pulled ahead.

The bottomline, the very same reasons I would take Ronnie ahead of Cadilac last April are the same reasons I see after 7 games why I would take him over the smaller back now.

It doesn't mean Cadilac will suck, it just means Ronnie is IMO a better all-around back, apparently the scouts around the league felt the same way last April as no one that I know of rated Cadilac higher than Ronnie.

You're reading into the wrong thing BlueFin. This is purely about how Don Banks unapologetically made a snap judgement that was profoundly stupid to make.

Not to mention, this is about how Don Banks, very homeristically, jumped on the two-week opportunity to call the guy his hometown favorites drafted the better of the two backs from Auburn. It wreaked of bias and stupidity, and now he should be flamed for it since, opportunistically speaking, after 8 weeks of the NFL Brown has outright outperformed Cadillac, in addition to staying healthy where Cadillac has not.

Also, Banks should be flamed for not even recognizing Brown's contribution once since he wrote what he wrote. I checked his archives, and basically the only things he'd talk about were either how the big deal about Ricky Williams isn't a big deal, and how Cadillac should try and get healthy enough to play against the Dolphins so that he can basically show the world which guy is the better runner. Nothing about how well Brown has done. Nothing at all.
