IMO you can only realistically expect a 1st round pick to start or compete for starting spot day 1. After that you should be looking at depth and players to hopefully contribute.

We should identify the strength of the 1st round and then tailor FA accordingly. At #19, IMO the strength is WR & OT, with OT by far the bigger need, with players like Taylor Lewan, Cyrus Kouandijio and Zach Martin all expected to go around that spot.

Thereafter we should identify the deepest positions of the draft, targeting players who drop due to combine or lack of size etc. This year I would go for OT obviously, DT (2-4), WR & CB. I would select 2 players at each spot, having them compete day one and improving the possibility of filling that need. I would then tailor Free Agency accordingly.

For example. at CB, we already have Taylor, Wilson & Davis. I would resign Grimes, but let Carroll walk and cut Patterson.

At DT I would resign only 1 of Starks & Soliai, with Starks being my preference.

Only other id resign would be John Jerry.

With this in mind I would look at Free Agency to sign a RB & OT, my preference would be LaGarrette Blount & Jared Veldheer. Thereafter I would look at players released for depth.

If we had taken this approach last year for example, the 4 positions in draft that I would have identified would have been, WR, OG, DT & DE (nobody expected Vernon to breakout)

With this in mind I would have re-signed, Bush, Hartline, Fasano (never injured and underrated) & Sean Smith. Would have kept both Dansby & Burnett and signed Clabo & Grimes.

I would have targeted DT in 1st round (Shariff Floyd, Lotuleilei & Sheldon Richardson) and players again who dropped due to combine or size/weight,length issues.

Draft would have gone:-

1-Star Lotuleilei DT - rated higher than any DT before combine and health scare
2-Larry Warford OG
2-DaMontre Moore DE
3-Quinton Pattern WR
4-Jesse Williams DT
5-Brandon Jenkins DE
5-Cobi Hamilton WR
7-TJ Johnson OG/C

I would have selected these based on BPA via http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-position/dt-by-position-input:ol which IMO has the best player ratings not taking into account combine etc

That is not true.

Not taking Keenan Allen in the 2nd round was a ****up, given our WR situation the last couple of years.

Kennan Allen is ordinary. There is a Kennan Allen in every draft.

Blount is a problem player. He's certainly talented, so ask yourself why he's been on a bunch of teams in his short career? It's because he doesn't play well with others. If you want a back like Blount who is actually a good guy then go get Toby Gerhardt instead. Or try to draft Jeremy Hill or Carlos Hyde (not that these guys are boy scouts).

Fair enough. I think you just have a much broader definition of ordinary than I do.

The key to Blount is in the coaching. He was clearly talented in college at Oregon and then when he joined Tampa Bay in the NFL, but he also showed an inclination to go off the rails in both places. New England got him for a turkey sandwich. This is the sort of big physical RB (he's over 250 lbs and is bigger than a linebacker) and is ideal for really bad weather conditions and Belichick knew he was getting a bargain if Blount was receptive to his tough discipline. He could still go off the rails. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots commit significant $ to keep him in Foxboro. My hunch is that Belichick offers modest $.
I would be very wary about Miami offering big $ to entice him. I think that Belichick is probably one of the few coaches that can handle him. Schiano is renowned for being strict and it is clear that he couldn't handle Blount and Chip Kelly had problems in Oregon.
