Sorry, I was so tired at looking at that other thread. Disgraceful on a Dolphins Message Board.
Here's why we CAN beat the Jets:
1) Rivalry Factor - This is a new Dolphins team and frankly I think they're sick of hearing about how the Jets have owned them as of late. As with all rivalries, anything is possible when these two teams get together - no matter what their records are.
2) The Expectation Factor - The Jets have loaded up for a run at the playoffs by signing Brett Favre, Alan Faneca, Kris Jenkins and drafting Vernon Gholston. The Jets have some very high expectations on their shoulders and whether their "Super Bowl or Bust" spending spree will have been worth it won't be known until January. Usually 4-12 teams don't throw so much $$$ at what could be considered a short-term fix. Contrastly, the Dolphins haven't broke the bank during free agency. But they did have an excellent draft and signed a lot of solid players in free agency. Probably the best record I've seen forcasted by national sports media for the Dolphins is 8-8, but more are in the 4-6 win range. The Dolphins go into this game with nothing to lose, but losing to the lowly Dolphins in week one would be a crushing start to the 2008 season for the Jets.
3) This IS a smarter and MUCH better coached team than the Jets have faced in some years.
4) Chad Pennington & Ricky Williams - While neither may make the Pro Bowl, these two will be strong contributors to making this a legitimate offense. I know the Jets have changed some of their terminology to try and counteract Chad turning over the Jets playbook, but Chad Pennington knows that team inside and out. A Jet fan may make the argument that the Jets know Chad inside and out, but what is better, to know the weakness of one player or know the weaknesses of an entire team? Throw in an emerging Ted Ginn and Anthony Fasano, a healthy looking Ronnie Brown, a sure-handed rookie in Davone Bess and quite possibly the best offensive line the Dolphins have fielded in fifteen years, and this team can score points. No, no one will mistake this team for the 1999 Rams or the 49ers of the 80s, but this will be an efficent and hard-nosed squad that wants to impose it's will on the defense.
5) The Jets are not the 1999 Rams or 49ers of the 80s either - They bleed just like every other team. I think this will be a very tough and fairly low scoring event with both teams giving their all.
