What is with everyone wanting to get rid of Welker? Welker is the man, he is the most consistent WR we have, and although he does not have the physical ability of CC or MB, he can always be counted on to catch the ball when it counts. He is a small guy with a huge heart who tries his *** off whenever he is on the field. He is a good returner, and an even better reciever. He will not get cut because he has heart, and he is a warrior. San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer already admitted he made a huge mistake letting Welker go, I don't see Saban being stupid enough to do the same. His upside is incredible, and he isnt expensive to keep around. Keep 83 baby.

chambers is the best but welker is our best return man till proven otherwise :cough: :cough: marcus vick

word up! BOW TO THE WELKER!
:allhail:

I don't want to see Welker go either. I think the reason people are posting this is because he has A LOT of competition at wide receiver (i.e. Derek Hagan, Kelly Campbell and Devin Aromashodu).

From what I've read, Wes' job as a punt returner should be safe. I don't think Marcus Vick or Frank Murphy will be able to unseat Welker.

What it comes down to is that if Welker doesn't make the final 5 or 6 wideouts we keep, I doubt Saban will keep him just for his special teams prowess alone.

That is my point as well. I appreciate Welker very much but I don't think he has much upside. He is as good as he is going to get. That's pretty good, agreed but imo, he will have a major battle in camp to hold on to a reserve WR spot against Hagan and Campbell primarily and for return duties over Campbell, Murphy, Aromashadu, and others.

Welker could prove to be the offensive version of Zgonina, the guy everyone expects to get beaten out and still makes it year after year, or this could be his last hurrah!

Here's what it is...he is a nice role player and a good STer, but he's not really all that. He has no upside....he has reached his capabilities. He's not a very good reciever. While being shifty and somewhat elusive after the catch, he can't get off defenders very well and can't get off the line quick enough. Nearly any safety and many LBrs can cover him. That's not what you want in a slot reciever or #3 WR. Another thing he can't do well is be the #2 guy on the outside, allowing CC to move into the slot, where he is very dangerous. Kelly's got the speed to allow us to do that.

IF,(and this is a big if yet) Vick, Aromo, Mitchell and Campbell can take the return duties from him, he could very well be the odd man out. Campbell is a very good #3 with speed and ability to shake off defenders to get open. He was a very good KR/flyer as well with Minny. Aromo is a rookie but is as fast as Campbell and has very good return skills both PR and KR. Vick is unknown at this time, but if he can fill in adequately as a PR, he brings more things to the offense than Welker ever can. Mitchell was considered one of the best PR/KR guys in his draft class.

Don't get me wrong, I like Welker and the things he's done for us...it's just that he's not all that...we probably have better options for his position than we've had in a long time...SAban is always looking to upgrade all 53 positions on the team, and may have at WR enough so that Welker is traded/sent packing in the fall sometime...

I like Wes to, but he is in the last year of his contract and we have all this youth with potential. I think Saban wants this to be his team that he built and based on WR skill and size, Wes could be the odd man out .

I can see it now, if we let him go, he'll go right to the Pats or Jets like so many other good player we let go.

First of all, not EVERYONE wants to get rid of Welker but it is what it is. Welker is a slot receiver at best and if you noticed last year his production fell off late in the year. Part of that had to do with teams playing physical against him and taking him off his primary route. The other part had to do with him wearing down because of his dual role as WR and PR. Saban himself said we need to find someone to compliment Chambers and Booker. IF Welker turns out to be that player, then great. IF not, he'll be our punt returner until someone can beat him out.

Welker having heart will not keep him on the team. Talent, ability and performance will.

I like tough guys that have speed and don't mind going across the middle. Welker is a good fit for our team and I think it would be stupid to get rid of him.

I don't think that Welker's position is in danger. He is the best returner we have had in a long time and he is more than a capable slot receiver.

I have not heard or read anything on Finheaven stating we are or should get rid of Welker. I believe he is a great compliment to this team and it's chemistry. Don't worry about it. Where did you get this info?

Some people don't see Welker as a lock, but I do. He did a really good job as the #3 WR last year and he might not be the #3 this year because of Hagan, but he will still have a role on the team. I would expect for Mularkey to have alot of 4-WR sets on the field. Welker is also one of the top PR's in the leauge and you don't let someone like that go. ST's is very important in the NFL.
