Hilliard, one of last year's sixth-round picks, followed up Monday night's 42-yard rushing effort against Jacksonville with a spectacular 39-yard touchdown run against the Panthers.

Hilliard, who spent all of last season on the Dolphins' practice squad, ran to the left behind a pull from right guard Donald Thomas and tiptoed along the sideline before diving into the end zone to put the Dolphins ahead 20-14.

He ended with 52 yards on nine carries and caught two passes for 11 yards.

Hilliard has already bettered his preseason showing from last year, when he gained 58 yards on 24 carries, and caught three passes for 24 yards in four games.

Hilliard has looked explosive this year, whereas last year he was plodding. It's a shame we had to extend Ricky and Cobbs, because Jalen Parmele and Lex Hilliard would give this team a very capable and very young three-headed monster.

Cobbs is a really good player to, he does anything and everything he is asked to do. & Ricky has looked good as well...

So the only thing is that we don't have Jalen Parmele...Oh well, I am not crying to much over that.

I was telling cats hes probably the most powerful down hill runner we have and cats were saying ronnie this and ricky that..yes those guys run with power too. But Lex, this guy you can see him once he gets the ball its like an unstoppable force running not much cuts just straigt ahead. I wouldnt mind keeping Ronnie Cobbs and Lex....once Ricky goes...

Agreed. Sort of reminds me of Brandon Jacobs. Very powerful back. I'd like to see him get some reps at FB. I wanna see how good or bad his lead blocking is.

Yes he has looked good but 52 - 39 = 13. That means he gained slightly more than a yard per his other 8 carries. And yet some of you seem ready to make him the #2. He's coming along nicely and I do hope there's room for him on the final roster. Having said that, I'm not yet convinced that he's better than Cobbs. I'm surprised the Ronnie haters (you know who you are) haven't demanded that Hilliard start.

Lex presents an interesting conundrum. I don't think he is going to out-value an extra LB or OL for the 53 man roster, and then another team will claim him off waivers.

It's too bad for him (and his fans) that our backfield is so crowded...maybe we get lucky and he clears waivers for one more year. We'll see.

Ronnie showed up yesterday.. i dont think theres any room for them today

One more strong game by Lex and has to be kept. On top of his running, he can be a core special teams player. If they try him at kickoff returns and flashes, then he's got a roster spot.

Rickey may start to show his age this year, and Ronnie may not be extended as he approaches FA.

I find it incredibly ahrd to believe we'll keep 4 runningbacks, when were already keeping 3 TEs,and placing Lex as a FB is essentially the same scenerio,so I really, truely cannot see him on the team.

Especially not PS,after last nights performance.Luckily,I think with another strong showing next week, before the roster cuts,we can possibly move him. From my observation,I think its quite possible we can get a 5th,maybe even a 4th out of Lex.

Expecially from struggling RB teams like CLE or DET,or teams in need of running back depth ofa no. 2 guy.

There's no way we don't keep Ronnie. You don't create vacuums at positions like that and there's no way to know if the RB we draft to replace Ronnie would be anywhere near as good.

Ricky is only valuable so long as we don't have a home run hitter to replace him. If Hilliard turns into that home run hitter, we can move Ricky or cut him. That's part of the reason I regret not keep Parmele, because he most certainly was a home run hitter last pre-season and his run averages with the Ravens suggest he still is.

Dude. Someone in another thread actually used "Hilliard" and "starter" in the same sentence. lol That's it. I'm done for today!

Lex is looking good so far. Nice stiffarm to avoid a tackle on his 39-yd TD. Nice hands on the swing passes, too.
He did have a fumble, tho. Even tho miami recovered, a fumble hurts him.

I dont see how we can keep him. There's no way he clears waivers to stash him on the practice squad again.

Getting rid of Lex would be a big mistake. WHY trade him when Ronnie & Ricky might not even be here next year? Lex and Cobbs are the RBs in waiting. Keep your best players regardless of position is the best way to go. Ricky is about done after this year and Ronnie might be a salary cap cut. Cobbs and Lex are the Fins future RBs. If the Dolphins must keep 4 running backs then do it.

I've got to think that the Dolphins would consider giving Lex the FB spot over Polite.

Polite is a sure-shot short yardage specialist with so-so lead blocking skills. (Nothing to scoff at. It always relieved some of the anxiety 4fth-and-1 knowing that Polite was money in those situations.)

Hilliard seems to have the pass-catching dimension that Polite lacks, and he is a special team contributor. He can clearly run the ball; it would be interesting to see if he could have similar success in short yardage or if he could block. I would be tempted to hold on to him. If he continues to improve, he would give the Dolphins some leverage/options with RB negotiations this offseason.
