Last night as I watched the Super Bowl it hit me. We need a quarterback that make plays down the field. I was the biggest Pennington fan this past year, but he could not have made half of those throws last night. I think Henne needs to be given a shot in the preseason for the starting job, because if he does not we are going to be set back a couple of more years while he is being broken in as a starter. I know you can learn on the bench, but it is never the same as playing. If we have the persanal to win a Super Bowl in two years I do not want to find out Henne is not the right quarterback. As good as we are, we are not in position to win a Super Bowl next year. Even though I wish we were. I felt after the season had ended Pennington should be our starter for next year, but after watching that game it made me realize how much you need a quarterback that can stretch the field. We saw what happend in the playoffs when we played a Super Bowl calaber defense. With out the fear of a quarterback beating you deep it makes it so much easier for a defense to defend.

Big Ben has a very good ability to elude pass rushers and buy extra time for his WRs. He also has this uncanning ability to make his best throws when it really matters. He kinda struggles during the regular season as sacks and turnovers go, but he is invaluable as a playoff QB.

Hopefully we have one of those types of QBs in Chad Henne. I like Pennington as well, but he is really limited in some of his throws, specifically the sideline throw, a pass that stretched the defense horizontally. I noticed teams would stack the middle of the field and give Pennington the sidelines from 10+yards. He seemed hesitant to make those throws because he lacks confidence in his ability to get enough zip on the ball so it doesn't get picked.

Pennington is limited, but I think he gives us the best chance to win. That said I think this year's competition is going to be more open than lots of people think it is. Henne will really need to outperform Pennington to get the nod though.

So you saw Larry Fitzgerald make play after play, and then watched Santonio Holmes win the freaking MVP award, you thought to yourself "Man, I wish we had a new QB!"

Really?

I agree with the original poster. I'm just worried that we might throw Henne out there at the wrong time. As you know we have a tough schedule coming up and until the line gels and we get some more talent at wide receiver I think we should stick with the proven thing right now: Pennington.

Because a quarterback was making throws to them that ours couldn't. Um how many fade routes did we try in the end zone this year and we couldn't complete them. That 65yd td to Fitzgerald was a dart. Pennington could not have made that throw. If you think Pennington could have made those throws you were watching a different quarterback than I was.

Penny made throws like that quite a few times this year. Just ask Camarillo and Fasano.

With the way some of you talk you would think Penny couldn't throw a pass past 5 yards.

Wasn't Penny top 5 in YPA? hMMM..... Guess that means only Dolphin WR'S makes YAC huh?

The problem with Penny is not letting him choose when to throw deep. He was lights out when he was able to scan the field and choose when to go deep and when not. However, lik ein the Ravens game, when he was forced to continuously throw deep that's when it hurt him

Henne would need to have an incredible camp to beat out Pennington. The number one thing that the Dolphins need from their QB next season is player development for the tight ends, offensive line, and the wide receivers. Henne does not have the experience to accomplish this goal. Also, Pennington will win a lot of games for us, so it is not like we Sparano is playing a bad veteran QB.

If we had a solid offensive team, then I would be in favor of Henne starting if he wins the QB competition. Given the current offensive talent, Henne would have to be significantly better than Pennington for me to favor him as a starter. I just do not see that happening, but I would thrilled if Henne outperforms Pennington by a significant margin. That would mean we have a clear, undisputed, pro bowl QB that is comparable to P. Manning. I would love that!!!

I agree the QB competition will be open if Henne really develops. It will be interesting to see how much we beef up the offensive line. Pennington with an extra second could be deadly. Plus if we develop into a hard nosed running team, that will open more options for Pennington. I've actually started to think with his poise and determination, he could win a SB.

Gentlemen,Pennington was one of the most accurate qbs this year. With time he can pick any defence apart, with TIME. Our problem is we need BIG PHYSICAL FAST WRs. No questions asked point blank period.

i think pennington could make it with a strong enough team.

and im in favor of handing him the starting job next year. i see no downside to henne learning for another year under pennington. he is getting payed for it and it leaves him with plenty of time to study or work. both of which would only help him, as well.

i dont think the team is good enough to make it to and win a super bowl next year. theres plenty of developing left to do still. and i havent forgotten about 07 yet.

its not like we are a top seed going into this draft. we all know the dolphins went against the odds to win the division this year.

It's not just about throwing deep it is hitting the out route. Warner took Palamala (?) out of the game yesterday with out routes and selected when he could hit slants across the middle based on the secondary's set up.

I also think that the QB position will be a quiet competition that unless Henne really blows Penne away, Penne will be the starter. But I would hope he is on a short leash. The team is a year older, will have more talent, and believes it can win which would make the transistion easier from a leadership standpoint, which Penne was so valuable in providing.

With the WRs that BOTH teams had, my Grandmother could have put up big numbers...and she's been dead for over 25 yars.

Sorry to be harsh w/someone I almost always agree with, GB, but let's play "Mr Rogers" for a moment. "Can you say 'SUPER great WRs'? I knew you could". The last FITZGERALD TD, for example, was not a "long bomb": it was a mid-length "post", that he caught in stride, and split the S's and outran everyone. PENNY would hit that pass 19 out of 20 times. Ditto, that 45 yard pass play to BOLDIN, the passes to that 3rd WR ARIZONA has, and all the short stuff to the HBs in the flat and the TE. Ditto, H WARD's big catch and the winning throw to S HOLMES. ACCURACY and great WR talent/play is what we saw on Sunday.
