I gotta admit...I had a dream that Manny Wright looked dominant right out of the box for us. Just a dream, but he's got that explosive first step you're looking for.

Between Wright, Roth, and Taylor, we should have a defensive line that is one of the quickest off the ball in league. I'm not sure whether or not Carter has ever been known to have that ultra-quick first step...probably, since he's so good. But I remember seeing the Jags' Henderson and Stroud on the interior in preseason, seeing how incredibly quick they are off the ball, and thinking yeah, they have one of the best tandems in the league.
 
That's half the battle in the trenches, getting into your man and creating leverage.
 
Roth clearly had that ultra-quick first step in the college game. I want to see it in action in the pros, because his quick first step might just be the norm in the pros. Manny supposedly has that ultra-quick first step, according to Orgeron, who openly compared him to Tez Rex (Cortez Kennedy).

And, of course, we all know about Jason Taylor :)
