Little Article on Lemon from Today

thats interesting. basically what ive been hearing from all the charger fans.

good stuff....if the season tanks i hope the kid gets some reps....

If nothing else, this deal was interesting from our perspective. We could've gotten rid of A.J. a number of ways - but why now, and why for this unknown third-stringer?? There must be something to it and I think we'll find out one day soon.

Not saying Lemon is the answer, but if nothing else, he could be a servicable backup for us, should our future #1 go down.

I just think Saban and Mueller are up to something! There's more to this than meets the eye.

I'd read somewhere yesterday that it benefitted us cap-wise for next year to trade him this year, and absorb some costs with space that we presently have available this year.

There are probably a couple of reasons for this... and they are probably not as complex as some of you would like to think (that the front office beleives he is the QB of the future.)

Sage is not signed for next year, and it is possible he would leave. Feeley was all but gone next year, because of his salary. So, we would have been stuck with having to get TWO QB's in the offseason and the possibility that if Gus were to go down we would have NOBODY on the roster that knew the playbook. If something were to happen to Gus early, we would also be stuck with NO QB's on the roster and being forced to overpay like we did when we brought in Feeley (remember at the time Sage was not signed, and it was thought the Fiedler would be cut.)

I think he will remeain a third stringer, and was just a move to make next offseason a little easier for us. Plus, we get the time to evaluate him as a backup for next year and have an alternative to Sage.

Hank Goldberg said the other day, that with that 6th round pick going to San Diego that he heard that was a like a down payment for a future trade between San Diego and Miami next offseason.. Rivers anyone??

That doesn't really matter though, just because either way we would have ended up with the same amount of cap space next year. If we cut Feeley, and therefore part of the cap hit gets absorbed next year instead of 100% of it this year, the Dolphins were going to carry about $2 million of our cap space this year into next year anyway, which would have offset the 2006 cap hit resulting from cutting Feeley.

As things stand, we have no cap hit next year for Feeley, but we also don't have the luxury of $3 million of cap room this season anymore either, which means we no longer have the ability to bundle up some of that cap space and send it forward into 2006 via phony incentives and whatnot.

While I doubt the "down payment" theory is actually founded in reality, I will say that further discussions and trades between the Dolphins and AJ Smith only increase the teams' rapport with each other and increase the likelihood of dealing with each other in the future.

The Dolphins, for instance, will probably NEVER deal with the Vikings again, ever ever ever...after what the Vikings did to us on the Carey trade. Well, not EVER, but so long as that Brzezinski guy is around we won't.

But the Dolphins now have three trades in as many years with the San Diego Chargers...and both teams have walked away feeling that neither ripped the other off I believe. We came to an agreement on Junior Seau, and he looked pretty good in 2003, was good last year before injury, and has been good this year injuries notwithstanding...totally worth what I believe turned out to be a 4th or 5th we sent over to get him. We only sent like a 6th and Jamar Fletcher over for the David Boston thing, and while he has turned out to be a productionless turd, we kind of knew that coming in and it isn't like we feel the Chargers fleeced us for him or withheld anything. He had a very decent shot at being productive for us last year had he not suffered the knee injury. Now, we send over AJ Feeley and a 6th for Cleo Lemon, who our coaches like, their coaches like, and could at least figure into some depth down the road.

These negotiating tables seem to trust each other, and that could go a long way toward facilitating any kind of Brees or Rivers trade next year. I am not saying either will happen...I personally am not sure Rivers has the arm to operate this offense no matter what his pedigree, but I have just been SUPER impressed with the dramatic turnaround in Drew Brees' armstrength in recent years. I have almost got to wonder if the guy is on roids or something. In the most recent game I saw him launch a jump pass waaaay down the field and I just said to myself, my god, who is that? It certainly isn't Brees! And, during the EA QB competition, Brees actually outdistanced a number of the "strong-armed" guys in the league like I believe Hasselbeck and Roethlesberger. Whatever voodoo the man did to his arm, it's making him a bonafied NFL QB and I still can't believe it.

i understand how some people here are reluctant to call lemon our future qb, or even reluctant to say he will become a starter. but those people who say he will stay a third string quarterback his whole career or not even be on this team next year are ridiculous. it shows how negative some people are and always have some crap to say about the team not doing what "they " think should be done. i hate people who know nothing about a player, and since they dont know who the player is hes automatically a bust. i dont care who you are, if you actually saw him play in that 49ers preseason game you wouldnt be talking that sh*t. doesnt matter if it was the 49ers, doesnt matter if it was third string. to be able to evade tackles like that and throw perfect strikes from 30 + yards away while on the run is impressive. he demonstrated the ability to make plays that 85 % of the quarterbacks in this league cant make. to say he was just part of the trade and we dont really want him? have you heard our coaches, their coaches, even dan marino talk about him? how do you then decide hell be a 3rd stringer? what could you possibly be basing this opinion on? ill tell you what-------
A. wasnt a star in college, didnt get drafted because of a torn acl
B. played in the arena league
C. played in nfl Europe
D. released by ravens (in order to sign a player because of injury)
E. 4th string behind brees rivers and flutie
F. 3rd behind rivers and brees (two first round pcks, and rivers gets the nod ahead of him just because he was their 1st rounder)
there you go. there are all the reasons i can possibly think you people could throw out there, and what does any of them have to do with a young kid pushing himself and working his way up from going undrafted through every possible means of getting into the nfl, working hard, and finally showing enough improvement to get a chance? what does any of them have to do with the last time he stepped on the field and played amazing? look at priest holmes---he was released from baltimore. not even kept to be a 3rd string running back or special teams player. then he gets to kansas city and look what happens. i would really be interested in hearing one of you who keeps saying how hell never be anything explain to me why you think that, and try to base your answer on any reason other than he wasnt glamorous in college

Brees has always had a solid arm. He showed good arm strength at Purdue and I remember him rocketing a 30 yd TD pass with some excellent zip on it past some defenders against the Dolphins pre-season of his rookie year. His biggest problem is he just didn't play well for a couple of years, not that his arm was wanting in any way.

He was a first round talent and I just cannot forgive moronic Wannstedt passing on him, even tho we had a QB need, to draft CB Jamar Fletcher when we already had Madison and Surtain.

That is unforgivable at a shocking level of incompetence.

I watched that game and started a Cleo Lemon thread. My thought was that he was good enough to be the backup to Brees this year and that they might trade rivers. I didn't think for a moment that they would trade lemon. The guy has serious talent To trade Aj for Lemon even with a 6th round pick is a serious up grade. I am excited to see if this kid can play anywhere near the level he did in san diego.
