I see alot of free agent a trade talk on here and look i like Roy Williams and if we could get Dansby, Haynesworth or a Suggs next offseason i would be ecstatic.

But we all want to get back to glory that is for sure. But i think our FO has the idea with the youth movement. I saw the post talking about what we would be willing to give for Roy Williams. Unless it was a steal i would say keep developing Ginn, London, Cam, and Hagan and hope Wilford returns to form. We seem to have the staff in place to delevop our talent. And another deep draft should set us up for a playoff run.

Now dont get me wrong FA acquisitions are great but only when your that piece away long term success will come faster if we build a strong foundation of talent laden young guys (landford, merling, long, henne etc etc).

so what do you think?

Yeah i agree with that the draft is the way to build for the future, just imagine another draft or two with this FO this team will improve hopefully to the next level.

I like that most the free agents they went after weren't stars, they were first-time FA's that had been solid enough to stick around the league, but not big-money types. Guys like Starks...what a pick up he has been so far. I hope they stay with that for another two years. Then when we are ready to make a run, then pick up one or two difference-makers.

I do agree that the way to build a team is mainly through the draft. Signing low priced veterans is also smart as you hope that they are mainly just fill ins until your young guys are ready.

Signing some high priced veterans is not a bad idea though. I mean, additions of Smiley, Starks, Pennington help move this team along and are pieces for the long term.

At this point, trading say a 1st round pick for an older veteran(like say Chad Johnson) is not a very smart move for this team. The Redskins offered two 1st round picks for Johnson (Ocho Cinco or whatever his name is this week), and were turned down. There is no way that trading two 1st round picks for a 30 year old receiver is a smart move.

While I want to keep building this team through the draft and adding some veterans through FA, doesn't mean I am against the occasional trade. Trading two 6th round picks for Jason Ferguson and a 6th round pick was a good move because it helps ease the transition to a 3-4 Defense. Sure we may only get 2-3 years out of him, but by then, hopefully we will have someone developed that can take over. Definitely worth the late round picks.

Also, trading a 4th round pick for Fasano and Ayodele seems to have turned out well.

The nice thing about this new regime is that they are taking low risks in trades. You will see probably a lot of the Ferguson/Fasano/Ayodele type trades and less Culpepper and Feeley type trades.

With all that said, if, and this is a BIG IF, Roy Williams of the Lions could be had for one 2nd round pick. You have to take it. At 26 years old, he still has a lot of football left and could vastly improve this team. Trade a 1st round pick for him? I wouldn't. But a 2nd round pick? Heck yes.

IMO, i dont see a problem in signing YOUNG free agents such as Karlos dansby, terrel suggs or roy williams. What i do have a problem with is trading high draft picks for washed up players or one year wonders.

It's great to find talent anywhere in the draft. I think its critical to find impact players at best and starters at worst with every 1st 2nd and 3rd pick. Every draft you're looking for 3 out of the 100 highest rated prospects. 12 important players in 4 years.

Were off to a good start with Long/Merling/Henne/Langford. The linemen are starters and getting better. Given the QB position, Henne's already where he needs to be as the back up to a veteran. His time will come.

Dude rebuilding a team also means getting free agents. A guy like Roy Williams would help Ginn/Henne and our slot guys immediately. I would rather trade a second round pick for a proven WR thats 26 year then to go after one in the draft.

you have to take the trade if for a 2nd rounder, and we could sign him this year, we have alot of cap rooom..

yeah you need a youth movement... but you need someone who knows what they are doing too, we need that at WR.. Mostimportantly, Henne will be much better if he can throw to ginn and williams, with bess/wilford/camarillo running the slot spot..
then we could draft someone tight in the 4th round next draft..

its gonna aid ginn's and henne's development, as well as building confidence and learning how to WIN games... this year...

hes not even old, he's 5th year, going into his prime now... he'll help ginn and henne so much next year, next year we are in the Post Rebuilding stage and we might be playoff bound fighting with the bills

I agree that u build through the draft but the problem is we have an obvious talent deficiency at WR with the current roster. In this case we could use a good veteran(Wilford does not count since he cannot even start on this WR weak team) to guide these receivers.

I agree you build through the draft, but I also beleive you have to develop these players and be patient not every rook can come into the league and contribute right away. In the past we have given up on players way to quickly but I think are FO is a little smarter than the past and understand the meaning of development.

Roy is 26 and an established talent... there are NO guarantees that any receiver drafted would have the same impact... He is a known commodity... If the FO was planning on taking a WR in the first then I trade a first for Roy instead... But if they plan to fill another need (LB anyone?) then offer only one of our seconds in a heartbeat... Otherwise stand pat. I think if you are planning to go receiever with your number one then Roy makes absolute sense.

I fully agree in building through the draft but we have such a need for a stud WR. If a young guy like Roy Williams is available for a 2nd I say we jump on it. He would step up the rebuilding process a year or 2 if we had to develop a top WR draft pick. WR's traditionally take more time to adjust to the NFL.

I think our late second rounder would be a steal for someone like Roy Williams. Imagine him with someone like Henne throwing bombs to him in the future. I think Roy will also bring out the best in Ginn.....Look what Chad ocho cinco or whatever his name is this week did for TJ Housamazilly....a lagit #1 can help Ginn but late second is the ABSOLUTE MOST i would give and only if we had him signed long term 3 days after the trade. If we get him we have to never allow him him to sniff FA

Because the draft should be soooo deep due to the probable rookie salary scale in 2010, there should be many underclassmen declaring for the draft to get the money. Therefore, a 2nd rd pick should be much more valuable this coming draft than the normal. For that reason along with Detroit not being able to pay 2 receivers top money (see the Cardinals), we should offer no more than a third with possibly a late round pick (6th or 7th) thrown in. Instead of the late pick, I'm willing to throw in Wilford or even Hagan.

I believe getting Roy Williams will have the same effect on Ginn the acquisition of Pennington has had on Henne. Because they have a real Pro to model on the team, the development and improvement will be hastened tremendously. It's one thing to hear, but another thing completely to hear and see.
