Still Perfect.. and You're Not.
Well it's been one hell of an offseason for the DOLPHINS; Will we be better than our 6-10 record last year? I certaintly think so. Here is my position by position analysis of our team. I am sure not John Clayton or Chris Mortenson so I wouldn't call myself an expert but I have our beloved Miami Dolphins going 10-6 or 11-5 and a lock for the Wild Card.
QB: As the 2006 season ended we all knew that there would be some serious changes at the QB position. Cleo Lemon was the only healthy QB we had left on the roster. In reality he played pretty well given the conditions against the New York Jets. I am very comfortable with him as a 3rd string Quarterback. Passing on Quinn in Round 1, the Dolphins waited to round 2 to select their future signal caller, John Beck out of BYU. Bottom Line is that Beck can flat out play and will be a better pro than Quinn. John Beck is smart, has great physical tools and is a student of the game. Dolphins QB Coach Terry Shea watched Quinn and Beck close and decided wait for Beck. Some compare Beck to Drew Brees, although it is way soon to do so, WOW! The Dolphins got their starter when they acquired Trent Green from the Kansas City Chiefs. Trent Green gives the Dolphins the best starting QB since #13. Green is a great passer and is very efficient. Some say Green is fragile but the experts said the same about Steve McNair and he had the Baltimore Ravens at 13-3 in 2006 .I expect Trent Green to play at a high level and be along the league leaders in passing. This offseason we addressed this postion in the short term with Trent Green and in the long term with John Beck. Green knows the system and knows defense, watch out.
RB/FB: 2007 will be the year that Ronnie Brown shows why he was the #2 overall pick in the 2005 draft.Ronnie broke the century mark in his 2nd season as a pro and looked rather impressive in doing so. I think if he didn't miss 4 games we could have been looking at a 1300 yard rusher. Ronnie Brown's potential will be reached in Cam Cameron's offense. I will make a bold prediction and say he will be our team MVP in 2007. Lorenzo Booker will prove to be a steal in the draft and is a perfect complement to Ronnie Brown. Booker is a homerun hitter who has great pass catching skills. I am very excited about Booker and think that he is a better option than Ricky Williams at this time. Both Booker and Brown should be happy that the Dolphins signed Cory "Sludge" Schlesinger. Sludge is a brutal blocker who will open holes as big as Jeanna Jameson's.. Well I won't go there but you get the point. Also the Dolphins Reagen Maua who has potential to be a good blocker.
WR/TE: After a disappointing 2006 season everyone was looking to trade or release Chris Chambers but not me. Since coming into the league he has caught more TD's than Chad Johnson and Steve Smith who entered the NFL the same year as Chambers. Just a season before last Chambers was scoring TD's in Hawaii. Chambers will get back to form with a steady and reliable QB. I think Chambers could be a sleeper in this year believe it or not. Marty Booker was our besr receiver last year and I am glad that he is on the roster still. I think Booker will be very productive and prove to be our best position receiver. Ted Ginn Jr. brings us a homerun hitter on offense that we have not had in a very long. Was it a questionable draft pick? Maybe. I think Ted Ginn will prove to be one of the best 5 players in this draft. His speed is undeniable as is nack of making big plays. Bottom line is that every time this guy touches the ball, defensive coordinators will be sick. Not to mention that Ted Ginn Jr. will come in a big one of the most dangerous return men in the league. Word out of Miami is that Derek Hagan has been impressing the hell out of everyone. Hagan should be productive for us and I truely belive we have 4 starting receivers on the roster. Az Hakim gives us a veteran who can also stretch the field. I was sad to see Randy McMichael go but in retospect he was not worth the salary. David Martin comes to Miami as an injury plagued underachiever. I think it is obvious that Cameron is pretty good at getting max potential out of his tigh ends, i.e. Antonio Gates. David Martin can catch and is extremely athletic. I predict 6 TD's for Martin and think he will be a pleasant surprise for the squad. Justin Peele can still block his arse off.
OL:
Our O-line sure does catch a lot of flack but I think we all will be surprised by this group. Vernon Carey, our best offensive linemen moves to left tackle where he will make the transition beautifully. Carey is a very good player and could be Wanny's best draft pick. Vernon is a much better player now then when he was a rookie. Chris Lewienski is a veteran who should start at left guard unless the Dolphins acquire Pete Kendall when the Jets release him. Lewienski would be servicable as Kendall would be great. Rookie Drew Mormino could be a draft steal because he looks pretty darn good so far. Rex Hadnot moves back to right guard where he has played well for the Fins in the past. Hadnot will be solid for us. LJ Shelton moves to right tackle where he should fair better than he did a left tackle last year. Shelton is better on the righ side of the ball. Mike Rosenthal gives us a veteran backup at the tackle position. Our starting center will be the Somoan Warrior, Samson Satale. This guy is as tough as nails and will be pancacking people all day on Sundays. Our line will defiantly be better than it was last year and should be solid for us.
K:
Sad to see Olindo go but at this time, Jay Feeley is a better kicker. Upgrade.
P: Brandon Fields is a rookie and hopefully he pans out because Donnie Jones was damn good.
DL:
Jason Taylor returns to the Fins coming off the honor of being 2006 Defensive Player of the Year. As usual expect Jason Taylor to have a monster year especially with the addition of Joey Porter.Matt Roth Starts at the other end and I believethis is an upgrade over Kevin Carter. Roth is hungry, you and one mean SOB. Kevin Carter once said that Matt Roth would be the reason he retired. Matt Roth will be the surprise of this defense. He also brings an attitude to an already stellar defense. Mkristo Bruce should make the team because he can pass rush as can Rookie Abe Wright. Keith Traylor comes back to clog the middle and Vonnie Holliday comes back after having the best season of his career and proving to be one of the league's most underrated players. Youngsters Rod Wright, Kevin vickerson, and Paul Solia should get into the rotation and put up some numbers. Solia fell to us in Round 4 after being a projected 2nd rounder, and Rod Wright would have been a 1st Round Pick in 2006 if he didn't get injured. Our D-Line is among the tops of the league.
LB: Bold statement coming...We have the best core in the league. Zach Thomas leaves everything on the field; he led the league in tackles last year and made yet another trip to Hawaii. I don;t care how old he is, you can't slow that man down. CHanning Crowder gets better and better and I expect HUGE things from him. How the hell did this guy fall to us in round 3? He reminds me of Lance Briggs. We retained Donnie Spargan for depth purposes as well as Derick pope. Oh I almost forgot we got Joey Porter. Critics say we paid too much for him.. Oh Well. Name a more productive linebacker in the last 5 years. Porter is great for three reasons.. 1) He brings attitude, intensity, and leadership to an already great defense 2) He combines with JT as the leagues best pass rushing combo 3) The guy can flat out play.
DB: Our safety's our solid as Renaldo Hill led our team in INT's last year and Yeremiah Bell proved to be our secondary's biggest playmaker. Will Allen was very solid for us at corner. Andre Goodman played well for us as well. I am excited that Travis Daniels is back healthy because going into the 2006 season he was our best DB. Jason Allen can play safety or corner and has a full year under his belt. I think he will contribute for us bigtime and eventually start. Jason is always around the bacll and is a fierce hitter. Ask Ben Watson.
Special Teams: Ted Ginn Jr. If you don't know what that mean go to You Tube and type in Ted Ginn Jr. Then if you have any questions, ask me.
Coaching: Saban stunk. He wnated to make us an old team. Cam Cameron brings the offensive mind we need and should get the most out of our playmakers.
Joey Porter, Ted Ginn Jr., Trent Green, Samson Satale, John Beck, Lorenzo Booker, Cory Schlesinger, and Cam Cameron is one hell of an offseason if you ask me.
