This list is pretty brutal. You can see why when you don't draft well in the 2nd and 3rd rds that our team has been mediocre for as long as we have. Recently, we might have turned a corner and are not wasting those high picks like we did in the past. Only time will tell.

2013

Jamar Taylor cornerback out of Bosie State was selected 54th overall in the draft. Taylor played in Miami from 2013-2015 where he played in 33 games and started in 9 of them. Taylor never really had what it took to be a everyday corner in Miami and was traded to Cleveland in 2016. Taylor is on a long list of 2nd round players that didn’t pan out in Miami.

I really, really hope this guy is not getting paid for such a poorly written, poorly edited and awful article.... I am upset that I even clicked on it... I see better writing daily on this very website...

To stay on topic, I think we gave up on a few of those 2nd round picks way too early in their careers. Philbin especially made some mind numbingly dumb roster moves. Guys like Sean Smith and Jamar Taylor were given up on too soon.

I think Jamar Taylor was half way decent for the browns no? I wonder if we had a decent coach what could have been with a secondary of Davis, Smith, Taylor as our corners. Even if Taylor did suck on the Browns Davis and Smith could have been a good duo if Philbin wasn't a crappy coach.

Wow, I feel vindicated! Most of my opinions at the time proved correct. Here is a list of which picks I liked at the time, was undecided at the time, and disliked at the time.

Liked:
2016 Xavien Howard (Loved the pick, was advocating for him before the draft)
2017 Raekwon McMillan (Loved the pick, he was one of the top echelon of LB's for me, and I had him rated higher than almost everyone else I saw. Can't wait to be proven right)
2018 Mike Gesicki (Loved the pick, this was the guy I was targeting here and I was blown away that we actually picked the right player)

On the Fence:
2013 Jamar Taylor (not an ideal pick, wasn't high on my list, but was hoping he would develop)
2014 Jarvis Landry (Yeah, I wasn't as positive as I should have been on this one. Loved the hands, questioned the speed. This was a great pick, regardless of how the saga ended)

Disliked:
2008 Phillip Merling (I even said I much preferred Langford our later round pick)
2009 Pat White (Inaccurate thrower, too small, not a progression read guy, gimmick player and wasted pick)
2010 Koa Misi (I wanted Rob Gronkowski. I was screaming Gronkowski's name and jumping up and down in front of the TV as I watched the draft. I was devastated when we drafted Koa Misi and the Patriots selected greatness 2 picks later)
2011 Daniel Thomas (not shifty, injury issues, not dynamic)
2012 Jonathan Martin (Lightweight, was giving him a chance)
2015 Jordan Phillips (too tall for a NG, back problems in a position that takes a ton of back abuse, unmotivated superman … just no)

If you've noticed, most of these fall in sync time-wise. The only thing I can figure is that better scouting minds were making decisions as time wore on. The sole miss since 2014 has been Jordan Phillips, and this is his chance to redeem himself.

Say what you will about Ross, but we definitely have seen improvement in the front office as he has learned how to become a good owner. He tried the hands-off process with Parcells, that didn't work. He tried the secretive selection process with Harbaugh, and botched that badly. He tried relying heavily on Ireland, that had mixed results. He tried the business process of endless interviews and panels of interviewers with lots of bosses over people's heads … that GM search process was a fiasco. He tried sports science with Tannenbaum, and that has been a mild success. Now he is promoting from within and going with proven football people using a football process with Tannenbaum, Grier, and Gase. Despite the Cutler year, it looks like it's working. Kudos to Ross for letting the football people do the football decisions and him supporting them well as an owner.

If our drafting continues like it has been lately, I'm very excited about the future of our Dolphins. We've gone through some of the worst drafting periods over the last 20 years. Since Marino came, we've had few gems and a tsunami of bad picks. I'm glad it's changing finally.

Very telling. From Landry on, it's certainly been much better. But those first few give you a good idea why Miami hasn't been a very good team over the past decade.

You make a good point on Ross. Nobody wants to give him credit, but looks like he's learned on the job.

The article is poorly written but it’s not as bad as the majority of the players it describes. Woeful drafting. Just woeful. I agree that since 2014 we look much better here. Are any of the scouts from 2008-2013 still with the team? Ducking up that badly is almost hard to do. Pat White and Koa Mississippi? Sean stone hands Smith and his 1 pick very 11 games to go along with countless drops right in his hands and whiff style tacking. Chad Henne. Jonathan Martin. Jamar Taylor. You can’t make this stuff up.

Nothing compares to the Wannstedt 2nd rounders...Rumor is that Donald Gibb was his consultant.

Article was like 'A Tale of Two Cities' in reverse ... it was the worst of times, it was the best of times. Such a glaring difference from Landry on.

Taylor was constantly hurt and abused when he wasn't while he was here. I was surprised we even got a pick back for him so that wasn't a bad move at the time. He's just been so-so in Cleveland so no big loss.

Just include the list of names next time. That was a hard read.

Miami won’t succeed at a high level if they don’t hit on picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Just as important, they need to keep their homegrown talent. Personalities aside, players who play with passion, have great talent and can stay healthy need to be kept. Winning cures a lot of personality flaws. And great leaders manage different personalities. They can’t build a perennial playoff team if they don’t draft well and keep them longer than 3-5 years.

I’m tired of the excuses too and every year it’s a different one. When they lose, and I expect them to lose about half, it’s going to be that they don’t have enough talent because their FA’s aren’t panning out. The holes they filled will need to be filled again. Yes, draft picks have been a little better, and they can build off that in the next draft. But at the rate of a few decent adds a year, they’ll be crawling into the playoffs.

It goes back further than 10 years.

2007- John Beck, Samson Satelle
2005-Matt roth
2003-Eddie Moore

big problems w dolphins will be signing these guy to 2nd contract.

Keep on mind that Shula had some real blunders too.....with his first round picks

Bosa
Shipp
Kumerow
Hampton
Sammie Smith

ok, I'll stop. This is depressing

Yeah, we had a pretty bad history of second round picks, but I feel like we’ve been turning that around in recent years. Of the last 5, 2 of them have played great for us (Landry, Howard) one has had flashes but needs to get more consistent (Phillips), and 2 have yet to play a snap but look like they could be difference makers (Raekwon, Gesicki). I hope they live up to expectations so we can say we’ve bucked that bad trend.
