Wow, I feel vindicated! Most of my opinions at the time proved correct. Here is a list of which picks I liked at the time, was undecided at the time, and disliked at the time.
Liked:
2016 Xavien Howard (Loved the pick, was advocating for him before the draft)
2017 Raekwon McMillan (Loved the pick, he was one of the top echelon of LB's for me, and I had him rated higher than almost everyone else I saw. Can't wait to be proven right)
2018 Mike Gesicki (Loved the pick, this was the guy I was targeting here and I was blown away that we actually picked the right player)
On the Fence:
2013 Jamar Taylor (not an ideal pick, wasn't high on my list, but was hoping he would develop)
2014 Jarvis Landry (Yeah, I wasn't as positive as I should have been on this one. Loved the hands, questioned the speed. This was a great pick, regardless of how the saga ended)
Disliked:
2008 Phillip Merling (I even said I much preferred Langford our later round pick)
2009 Pat White (Inaccurate thrower, too small, not a progression read guy, gimmick player and wasted pick)
2010 Koa Misi (I wanted Rob Gronkowski. I was screaming Gronkowski's name and jumping up and down in front of the TV as I watched the draft. I was devastated when we drafted Koa Misi and the Patriots selected greatness 2 picks later)
2011 Daniel Thomas (not shifty, injury issues, not dynamic)
2012 Jonathan Martin (Lightweight, was giving him a chance)
2015 Jordan Phillips (too tall for a NG, back problems in a position that takes a ton of back abuse, unmotivated superman … just no)
If you've noticed, most of these fall in sync time-wise. The only thing I can figure is that better scouting minds were making decisions as time wore on. The sole miss since 2014 has been Jordan Phillips, and this is his chance to redeem himself.
Say what you will about Ross, but we definitely have seen improvement in the front office as he has learned how to become a good owner. He tried the hands-off process with Parcells, that didn't work. He tried the secretive selection process with Harbaugh, and botched that badly. He tried relying heavily on Ireland, that had mixed results. He tried the business process of endless interviews and panels of interviewers with lots of bosses over people's heads … that GM search process was a fiasco. He tried sports science with Tannenbaum, and that has been a mild success. Now he is promoting from within and going with proven football people using a football process with Tannenbaum, Grier, and Gase. Despite the Cutler year, it looks like it's working. Kudos to Ross for letting the football people do the football decisions and him supporting them well as an owner.
If our drafting continues like it has been lately, I'm very excited about the future of our Dolphins. We've gone through some of the worst drafting periods over the last 20 years. Since Marino came, we've had few gems and a tsunami of bad picks. I'm glad it's changing finally.
