Looking back on the '04 draft

I was just reading an article on espn.com about the '04 draft. I remember after the '04 draft, everybody thought it was our best draft in a while. Looking back, it was a actualyl a poor draft with a few bright spots.

The Dolphins had a below-average 2004 draft. Their only first-day pick was first-round OT Vernon Carey, who has been a durable and productive player. He played right tackle in 2006 and has shown enough athleticism and effectiveness that the new coaching staff is considering moving him to the left side. However, his success is offset by the fact the Dolphins did not have picks in the second or third rounds, and fourth-round CB Will Poole and fifth-round LB Tony Bua already are out of the league. Miami did find a starter in the sixth round in center Rex Hadnot, who has been a durable and effective player for the middle of the Miami offensive line. Two seventh-round picks that have had little impact. OT Tony Pape has been off and on practice squads and has not provided even effective depth to a team. yeh, Carey first really good year was last year. Poole had a ton of hype, and was injured too much. I still think Pope can show us something this year. But Carey is the only notable one from that draft
 
I'd actually consider the 2004 one of our better recent drafts, which isn't exactly saying much. Carey seems like he'll be a fixture at the RT position for a while, something we haven't had in a while. Rex Hadnot may not be great, but he is an above average lineman and a steal as a sixth round pick. Pope has been a nice contributor on speical teams and has filled in admirably when needed on defense, another good late round pick.

Although Will Poole didn't work out, I still wouldn't say that was a bad pick. He was a first round talent that we were able to get in the fourth round. Didn't work out, but I liked it a lot at the time and really can't blame the front office too much for that one.

We were able to land two above average starters and a good ST/backup player in our six picks. Once again, not great, but not bad considering our draft history.

I don't know dude, you have to evaluate the draft by how many players are starting or providing solid depth and getting snaps on the team, and two players, is not very good. To talk about Will Poole's potential is pointless because the truth of the matter is that every player drafted in every round has potential and if they fail to realize that regardless of the reason, they can be labeled a bust. The 2004 draft was not a good one...
 
i dont remember anyone being happy after that draft...... 05 was the good one IMO.

I know we didn't land a whole lot of impact players in that draft, but that has more to do with not having our full amount of picks than anything else. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this was a good draft, I'd probably give it like a C, but when you compare it to our other drafts over the past five-ten years, a C isn't bad. A lot of people think that Carey performed at a pro-bowl level last year and could have made it had we had a good record.
 
Who in the world thought this was a good draft in the first place? Can you even have a good draft with one pick in the first three rounds? Rarely if ever...

Compared to the 2003 draft, this one was a godsend. We landed a rising talent at RT in Carey (who could also be a decent LT), a solid but average C in Hadnot, and Pope, who played pretty well when he started for an injured Zach and is a good ST for a guy who was drafted pretty low. Poole I might give a pass if he returns because he played fairly well when he was healthy.

Now look at 2003's draft. Save for Bell, who was a late bloomer, all of the others sucked hard. Moore barely played and is worth nothing. If there was an encyclopedia of disgustingly bad LT's, you'd see Wade Smith's picture. Whitley, Williams, Provost, and Tolver were dead on arrival. Jenkins and Lee were ok backups only for other teams. We had a lot of picks in this draft and yielded barely anything, which shows that quantity doesn't trump quality.
