Winning is a Habit
I tried as hard as I could to refrain from posting yesterday after the game. I am usually very angry whenever we lose. I have a tendancy to be in a bad mood for the rest of the day, but I can keep my head an not rant about cutting players based on their performace in one game.
I think when our team lays an egg like they did (mostly the O), we try to find reasons why. And yesterday the reasons were not obvious. Was it Chad? Was it the OL? Was it our Pass D? Wass it the WRs? Was it Fasano? Well to tell you the truth, it was probably a lot of everything. The run D was spectacular, so no issues there. Special teams were horrible as well. Coverage was not so bad, but kick return was.
I will watch the game again later today via game pass, but from my first impressions of the game, I can honestly say our OL was horrible. No push whatsoever up the middle. I can honestly say that I think Grove was an upgrade over Satele, but how much? Both seem to be pretty bad now. Smiley had a bad game as well and he is usually very solid. Thomas was good, didn't see many mistakes from him. Long and Carey seemed to have struggled on the edge most of the day. They need to fix somehting and fast!
I can say Chad P is not all-world. He is a solid QB with limitations. So it is safe to say we all know this. So why does everyone expect him to change now? The fact is he is the best we got. Chad H is not ready. We all saw what he did in the preseason. Chad P can only suceed if the OL does their job. And since our O is making $155 million, I think they need to block. If this trend of our OL laying an egg continues, then we may be out of the playoff race fast!
Chad P had a bad game as well. He does not have faith in his arm to take shots down the field. The WRs were getting open down field, but the combination of the pass rush and Chad P's reserve to go deep kept us from taking advantage. He needs to start taking some shots. He did a couple times and they worked. One was a nice deep in to Bess for a good 17 yard gain. He needs to change his play, and fast, cause our OL may not be able to help him out much this year.
In football, it seems once things start out bad, they continue that way. And the only real way to stop that is via the coaches. They have to see it and make adjustments for the players. You just can't keep trying to put a square peg in a round hole. The coaches didn't do their job yesterday, i don't think that will happen again. Sparano and Co. are very good at their job and I think they can rebound from this.
Our pass D started our not so good, but played very well in the second half. Good job by the coaches of making the adjustments there. Tony G, what can I say. If you told me he would only have 5 receptions and 77 yards on us before the game, I would of thought we would of won. The guy is the greatest TE in the history of the NFL for a reason. Bell and Wilson struggled early against him, but did better in the second half.
The truth is we need someone to blame and get the ax. The fact is we are not good enough to suffer the loss of anyone from our roster. Are we Super Bowl worthy? Probably not, but you never know. Fact is we need our guys to come together and embrace the fact that they do have enough talent on our roster to win a lot of games. I feel they play much better against the Colts, but the sad fact is that may not be enough. The Colts are always good and let's hope Manning struggles with the loss of Gonzales and we can squeak out a W. Hopefully playing in front of a sold out home crowd can help that.
I will let you know what I see after I watch the film.
