So Adam Gase is gone. Good. Original reports were that Tannebaum would be out as VP. While it's true, he's still within the organization and wasn't fired, he was "reassigned" to another position where he supposedly doesn't have anything to do with football operations. So Ross promotes Chris Grier to VP who is supposedly going to report directly to Ross. But we don't know if Grier will continue to be GM or will Ross hire a new GM. So so far we have:
HC: Adam Gase-OUT
VP: Mike Tannebaum- "Reassigned"
GM: Chris Grier- VP/GM (for now)
Already we have a mess.
When Ross introduced Grier as new VP, he said Gase was fired because Gase didn't wanna do a rebuild and Ross does.Whatever the reason, Ross appears to be on board with a rebuilding, but it doesn't appear he knows how to do that correctly based on his moves so far. Moving Tannebaum from VP to another position within the organization doesn't sit well with me. To me that's code for Tannebaum is still going to be influential on the Dolphins, Ross just won't say it officially. He's still going to have Ross' ear. I find it highly unlikely that Tannebaum is going to move somewhere else within the organization and suddenly have zero input when it comes to football.
Somehow through all this Grier gets a promotion. This is rearranging the deck chairs. Grier is being rewarded. This has got to be extremely alarming. Why is Grier being rewarded for an average job? One good draft out of the last 3 years? He's been in charge of scouting with Miami for over a decade. Miami evaluating talent the last decade with Grier has been nothing to write home about. So how does this equate to a promotion for Grier? Ross needed to have a search for a new operations guy for a new voice. How you going to change the direction of the franchise when the same old mediocre voices in Tannebaum and Grier are still present? Miami needs fresh new voices.
Why is it so hard for Ross to clean house thoroughly? He cleans the basement of the house, he cleans the interior of the house...barely by moving some clutter to the Attic. And of course the Attic remains untouched with the exception of more cluttered items being added.
Ross has basically kept things the same. Most Dolphins fans should be uneasy about what's going on. What other competent franchises do this to start a "rebuild"? Ross is just to loyal to guys that should be fired. I'm afraid he's going to be "cleaning house" yet again in a year or 2 from now. Especially when the next coach is butting heads with Grier because they have different views. Ross needed to find an experienced guy for VP first and then let that guy pick his coach and go from there.
I think FA will determine if Ross is really adamant about a rebuild. He's saying one thing but his moves say otherwise so far.
