Well done Mike Singletary. If he can keep the 49ers playing as hard as they have been recently and get a bit more talent on the roster, it should be a good hire for them. I hope he does well but not when they're playing Miami.
Remember when the Rams were going to write something into Haslett's contract about how he could earn their full time head coaching job if they won a certain number of games? The NFL wouldn't allow it because they said it would go against the Rooney rule, about minority head coaching interviews. Not that Haslett did well enough to have activated any such possible contract agreement but does it not seem a bit unfair the 49ers are allowed to hire Mike Singletary without interviewing anyone else while the Rams weren't allowed to do the same with Haslett? I imagine the Rams 'dodged a bullet' by not hiring Haslett but, in principle, it seems like double standards. Should it not merely be a matter about getting the best person for the job? It seems as ridiculous as saying 'There are too many fat coaches in the league. We've got to have a rule so the skinny guys get more interviews'. I mean, in this day and age are people really stupid enough to think 'Hmmm, that guy's a really smart and capable football coach but I don't want to hire him and make my team successful and hugely profitable because of the colour of his skin'? I would hope not. This isn't something I want to get into a stupid debate about. It's merely something I don't understand. If a would be employer is a racist, what's to stop them simply bringing someone in for an interview and not hiring him (or her)?
Anyway, sorry for going off-topic a bit/lot there and congrats again to Mike Singletary (knowing he'll read this of course). I hope he can bring some respect back to the 49ers. I couldn't stand them when they won everything but kind of miss them now they lose a lot.
