Is it just me, or does Louis Ellis look more of a 3-4 defensive end then a nose tackle, i seen him in our rookie mini camp vids and the guy looks like a perfect defensive end to me.....i guess im just gonna have to wait and see how he looks with shoulder pads on, maybe it'll be a bigger difference

I think you are right. I sounded like Sparano wanted him actually to lose weight because he tended to slow as practice went on. If that is true, he will not be nose unless the guy is REALLY strong...just not enough mass...

They consider him a nose. Jason Ferguson is a nose and he's 305 pounds. The guy Ireland drafted in Dallas and that played nose while Sparano was still there, Jay Ratliff, was around 300 pounds as well.

The current Miami staff are in no way beholden to the idea of having their nose tackle be 340 pounds. In fact, they have suspended Paul Soliai twice because he has been too heavy. They want him a lot lighter than he is.

When I heard Sparano's comments that was my first thought, end not nose. Would make a tough run stopper lining up as end, a little lighter...

I look at Ellis and I see nose all the way. Big gut, big butt. And he's "country strong".

All indications are he's a nose. They just want better stamina out of him and better quickness, hence asking him to lose weight.

Miami's not one of the teams that has their nose tackles be huge guys. I'm not sure what about Big Lou sets off your guys alarms thinking he's an End but he looks all nose, to me. I thought in this draft that the only three nose guys I saw, really only one of any worth but three altogether, were Ron Brace, Darryl Richard and Myron Pryor. New England drafted all three of them...and they were the team that was showing the most interest in Big Lou Ellis, too. When in interview he said the team that showed the most interest in him kept taking D-tackle after D-tackle, he was talking about New England.

It's so hard to find them that you're just playing a numbers game, really.

And plus, there are like 15 teams out there now playing a 3-4 or some derivative, most of them in the AFC. They'd all love to have a nose guard. If NE can keep them from training one on for a whole training camp, yeah that does put some of those other teams at a disadvantage especially since many consider the nose position to be the most critical piece of the puzzle for a 3-4 defense.

Ellis is fine as a NT because he is shorter. He can stay low to the ground and have good leverage to two-gap. The taller guy's become ends.
